Abstract: A method of operating an internal combustion engine, and more particularly a fuel injector is disclosed. The fuel injector is commanded to inject a fuel requested quantity. The fuel requested quantity is adjusted by closed-loop for controlling an engine speed to match a target value thereof. A value of a first parameter indicative of an amount of electrical energy supplied to an electric battery by an electric generator coupled to the internal combustion engine is measured. A value of a voltage generated by the electric battery and a value of the engine speed are measured. A reference value of the fuel requested quantity is calculated on the basis of the voltage value, the engine speed value and the value of the first parameter. A difference between the value of the adjusted fuel requested quantity and the reference value is calculated and used to control the internal combustion engine.

Abstract: High pressure loop exhaust gas circulation is achieved in an exhaust system (10) of an engine (12) by providing an adjustable valve (100) in an exhaust passage (18) of the engine (12). The valve (100) is configured to control fluid flow through the passage (18) and generate pressure to drive the high pressure exhaust gas recirculation. The valve (100) includes a valve inner surface (110) that has a curvilinear profile when viewed in longitudinal cross section. An actuator (140) is connected to the valve (100), and is configured to move the valve (100) relative to the exhaust passage (18) so as to control exhaust gas pressure within the exhaust passage (18). In some embodiments, a pilot tube (280) is used in combination with the valve (100) to generate high pressure exhaust gas recirculation at the engine (12) intake.

The LR-EGR system is equipped with a LR-EGR cooler, which is cooled by a LR-EGR coolant circuit receiving coolant from an engine coolant circuit. The turbocharged automotive system further includes a low temperature coolant circuit and a connecting element for connecting the LR-EGR coolant circuit with the low temperature coolant circuit bypassing the engine coolant circuit.

Abstract: A system and method for determining an engine mass air flow (MAF) for use in an engine air to fuel ratio (AFR) calculation to operate an engine includes monitoring engine operation, determining in the electronic controller a first estimation of engine MAF based on a regression model, determining in the electronic controller a second estimation of engine MAF based on a flow model, and selecting the first or second estimation of engine MAF based on an operating state of the engine. Each estimation can use various engine parameters interchangeably to provide a robust system against sensor failures.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides for a vehicle engine having an EGR system where pairs of cylinders are directly connected to each other. For example, a first and second cylinder may be operably connected by a valve actuator where a high energy, blowdown exhaust gas from the first cylinder may flow through a first flow path directly from the first cylinder to the second cylinder. Likewise, during the firing stroke of the second cylinder, a high-energy, blowdown exhaust gas may flow from the second cylinder through a second flow path directly into the first cylinder. This arrangement may pair cylinders to take advantage of high-energy exhaust gas.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder case forming a cylinder bore having a centerline and an inner bore surface. A piston disposed within the cylinder bore forms a crown surface. A region defined between the piston and the cylinder bore in a radial direction has an annularly shaped mouth opening surrounding the crown surface. A cylinder head is disposed to cover an open end of the cylinder bore such that a variable volume is defined within the cylinder bore between the cylinder head and the piston. The cylinder head also forms a flame deck in fluid contact with the variable volume. A deflector structure forms a portion of the inner bore surface adjacent the flame deck surface, and is disposed between the flame deck and a topmost ring seal groove of the piston when the piston is at a TDC position.

Abstract: Embodiments for heating a vehicle cabin are disclosed. In one example, a method for heating a vehicle cabin comprises closing an exhaust throttle while diverting at least a portion of throttled exhaust gas through an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler coupled upstream of the throttle, and transferring heat from the EGR cooler to a heater core configured to provide heat to the vehicle cabin. In this way, exhaust heat may be directly routed to the cabin heating system.
