A combined dual ganged manifold and cover arrangement for batteries features channeling of gas flow to an explosion attenuation device located between the manifolds and a cover designed for maximizing return to the battery of any electrolyte which may contact the cover from vibration, tilting, overheating, overcharge and the like. Splash barrels within the cover include a unique acid level indicator, and feet are provided on the manifold to prevent the manifolds from inadvertently being used with other cover designs. The arrangement is particularly useful for batteries having terminal posts lying along the battery centerline. The cover utilizes external and internal gas pick-up systems and perpetual hill and infinite well concepts to control acid flow. A narrow channel reduces standing wave electrolyte surface violence.

A vent cap for use in a recombinant battery which includes a hollow barrel configured for gas-tight insertion into a vent hole in a battery cover. A retaining flange is formed at the closed end of the barrel, and a one-way relief valve formed on the barrel near its closed end. A layer of a polyalkylene explosion attenuating material surrounds the outside of the barrel below the flange and surrounding the relief valve. The polyalkylene material provides effective attenuation of explosions that occur in the vicinity of the relief valve. The invention further provides a vent cap assembly wherein the foregoing vent cap is mounted on a plastic vent cover of an otherwise conventional battery container.

An anti-spill arrangement is disclosed for a liquid electrolyte battery. The device comprises a chamber configuration or arrangement for containing electrolyte associated with a battery cell, when a battery is tipped toward or onto any one of its sides. The chamber arrangement has an inlet in communication with an associated battery cell and an outlet in communication with a vent to atmosphere. The chamber arrangement is such that regardless to which side a battery having the device is tipped, electrolyte flows from the associated battery cell into the chamber arrangement to a level which blocks further electrolyte flow through the inlet. The chamber arrangement is such that the contained level of electrolyte remains spaced from the outlet of the arrangement. Thus, this type of device precludes flow of electrolyte out of the anti-spill device when the battery is tipped to any one of its sides. The arrangement may be such that, when the battery is righted, the electrolyte is returned to the respective cell to thereby restore electrolyte in that cell to its operating level.

A container for a maintenance-free lead-acid storage battery includes a multi-compartment base wherein individual cells of the battery are contained. An overlying cover in vapor-sealed engagement with the base includes a plurality of integrally-molded filler wells which extend from a recess in the top surface of the cover into respective cell compartments of the battery. A one-piece molded vent cover seated within the recess includes a plurality of vent plug portions which extend through the filler wells into respective ones of the cell compartments. An annular flange associated with each filler well coacts with ribs on the vent plug portions to lock the vent cover in place. Escaping battery gas is conveyed from each of the cell compartments by axially-extending recesses on the vent plug portions, which form passageways from each cell compartment, and by ribs on the underside of the vent cover which space the vent cover from the battery cover to provide an additional passageway extending to the escape gas gap through a peripheral gap formed between the vent cover and the side walls of the recess.

A vented battery cap is provided which is adapted to engage at least one of a plurality of fill holes in an automotive storage battery or similar lead acid battery and which has pressure release means for venting the combustible gases produced within that storage battery under conditions such as overcharge conditions into the atmosphere, said pressure release means comprising a plurality of extremely narrow slits having widths in the order of 0.003 to 0.005 of an inch. The remainder of the battery cap is tightly sealed to prevent any extraneous leaks of battery gases received from the automotive battery from leaking into the atmosphere. The slits are so constructed to facilitate the safe expulsion of any volume of gas normally produced by an automotive storage battery, while virtually eliminating the likelihood that ignition of gases within the atmosphere will result in explosive consequences either within the battery cap or within the battery itself.
