An apparatus for recording information and tracking signals on magnetic tape includes first and second magnetic heads for recording the information signals on the magnetic tape. The first and second magnetic heads are mounted for rotation about an axis for scanning the magnetic tape for recording the information signals in successive tracks. The first and second magnetic heads are disposed at respective positions along the axis separated from one another by substantially one track pitch and have respectively different azimuth angles. A third magnetic head serves to record the tracking signals on the magnetic tape and is mounted at a position rotationally substantially opposite a rotational position of the first magnetic head and is substantially axially aligned therewith. In accordance with a method of recording information and tracking signals on magnetic tape, the information signals are recorded on the magnetic tape with the use of first and second magnetic heads mounted for rotation about an axis at respective axial positions spaced by substantially one track pitch. The first and second magnetic heads have respectively different azimuth angles, such that the information signals are recorded at correspondingly different azimuth angles in successive tracks. The tracking signals are recorded in at least some of the successive tracks with azimuth angles substantially the same as those of the information signals in adjacent ones of the successive tracks.

When a preceding track is scanned, the second signal recorded therein is detected; and at a time delayed from the detection of that second signal, the first signal picked up as a crosstalk component is sensed. When a following track is scanned, the third signal recorded therein is detected; and at a time delayed from the detection of the third signal, the first signal picked up as a crosstalk component is sensed. The difference between the first signal sensed when a preceding track is scanned and the first signal sensed when a following track is scanned is indicative of a tracking error.

An MPEG downdecoder is to be provided which eliminates pixel dephasing with the field DCT mode and the frame DCT mode without detracting from picture characteristics proper to interlaced pictures. To this end, a decimating IDCT unit 14 effectuates 4×4 decimating IDCT if the DCT mode is the field mode. If the DCT mode is a frame mode, a decimating IDCT unit 15 effectuates IDCT on the totality of coefficients of a DCT block to separate the coefficients into two pixel blocks associated with interlaced scanning. The decimating IDCT unit 15 executes DCT on the separated two pixel blocks. The low-frequency components of the two pixel blocks are processed with IDCT and the two pixel blocks are synthesized.

The method for data decompression receives four inputs representing digital representations of an image and performs a combination of an inverse weighting function and a 4-point inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) to obtain pixel components of an image. The methods and systems of the present invention may be used in optimizing digital video encoders and decoders.

A second quantization step decision unit determines a quantization step in terms of the macro-blocks as a unit so that the quantity of quantized data is less than the pre-set data quantity. A quantization unit quantizes the digital video signals with the quantization steps determined by the first quantization step decision unit and the second quantization step decision unit. This enables efficient encoding and improved picture quality.
