Abstract: A sensor for sensing diols and triols includes (a) a substrate, (b) a conductive coating disposed on the substrate and having affinity for binding with a substance selected from the group consisting of diols, triols, and a combination thereof, and (c) two electrodes in contact with the conductive coating to probe conductivity of the conductive coating so as to detect the substance from a reduction in the conductivity. A method for detecting vaping includes (a) measuring conductivity of a conductive coating having affinity for binding with an airborne substance selected from the group consisting of diols, triols, and a combination thereof, and (b) detecting presence of the airborne substance as a decrease in the conductivity.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a screening method for materials that suppress the characteristic body odor of elderly people. The screening method of the present invention is designed such that test substances are screened with olfactory receptors responsive to substances responsible for the characteristic body odor of elderly people to select candidate substances for materials that suppress the characteristic body odor of elderly people, and this method comprises adding a test substance and a substance responsible for the characteristic body odor of elderly people to at least one olfactory receptor polypeptide selected from the group consisting of (a) OR2C1, OR2J2, OR4E2 and OR5P3, and (b) polypeptides which comprise an amino acid sequence sharing an identity of at least 80% with the amino acid sequence of any of the polypeptides in (a) and which are responsive to the substance responsible for the characteristic body odor of elderly people; measuring the response of the olfactory receptor polypeptide to the substance responsible for the characteristic body odor of elderly people; and identifying a test substance that suppresses the response of the olfactory receptor polypeptide on the basis of the measured response. Moreover, the present invention relates to a screening method for trans-2-nonenal odor suppressors and a screening method for trans-2-octenal odor suppressors.

Abstract: A rapid testing mechanism for respiratory viral pathogens includes a filter material positioned to capture exhaled breath particles from a respiratory tract. At least a portion of the filter material includes a pathogen binding adsorptive reagent, wherein the pathogen binding adsorptive reagent is a sulfated cellulose membrane. When the exhaled breath particles pass through the filter material, the following occur: when the binding adsorptive reagent reacts, a positive test for respiratory viral pathogens is indicated by the filter material; and when the pathogen binding adsorptive reagent does not react, a negative test for respiratory viral pathogens is individuated by the filter material.

Abstract: A replaceable alcohol sensor module for use with a breathalyzer. The alcohol sensor module requiring calibration can be removed from the body of the breathalyzer and replaced with a new alcohol sensor module. The alcohol sensor module has at least an alcohol sensor and a circuitry mounted on a PCB that removable connects the replaceable alcohol sensor module to the breathalyzer. The circuitry transmits the signal and/or electrical current generated by the alcohol sensor to a processing unit of the breathalyzer for processing.
