摘要: Tissue orientation devices include a perforated tissue support with at least one perforated channel for receiving a tissue sample, and a plurality of tabs configured to extend along and into the channel to retain the tissue sample during processing and embedding. Tissue orientation devices include elongated legs coupled together for holding one or more biopsy tissue samples therebetween. Associated methods include using the cassettes and orientation devices to hold and orient tissue samples for processing, embedding and microtome sectioning.

摘要: A suction cup adapted to engage a surface of a beating heart with sufficient force to move the beating heart to an unnatural position upon moving the suction cup, while the suction cup maintains engagement with the surface of the heart and the heart continues to beat. Various suction cups are described each including at least a first chamber having a flexible rim and configured to engage the surface of the beating heart and a second chamber smaller than the first chamber and fluidly connected therewith. A suspension device configured to engage a beating heart and maintain engagement via suction while moving the suspension device to move the beating heart to an unnatural position and maintain the beating heart in the unnatural position to perform a surgical procedure, while the heart continues to beat, includes a suction cup and a support arm connected thereto. The suction cup has a first chamber configured to engage the surface of the beating heart and a second chamber smaller than the first chamber and fluidly connected therewith. The second chamber is adapted to fluidly connect the first chamber with a source of suction. The support arm is movable with the suction cup to effect movement of the beating heart after engagement of the suction cup to a surface of the beating heart. A method of manipulating a beating heart to orient the beating heart in a desired position for performing a surgical procedure includes providing a suction cup having a first chamber configured to engage the surface of the beating heart, and a second chamber smaller than the first chamber and fluidly connected with the first chamber, the second chamber being further fluidly connected to a source of suction; contacting a surface of the beating heart with the first chamber; applying suction between the first chamber and the surface of the beating heart, thereby engaging the suction member with the surface of the beating heart; and moving the suction member while maintaining engagement with the surface of the beating heart, thereby moving the beating heart.

摘要: A ring for use in anastomosis. Preferably, the ring is integrally formed from metal, and includes a ring portion and tines and docking members that extend from the ring portion. The ring portion and tines are malleable, and preferably also the docking members are malleable. The ring portion and tines are malleable in the sense that once deformed from a first shape into a second shape, they will not relax back into the first shape from the second. To install the ring in a vessel with the ring portion extending around an incision or other orifice, the tines pierce the tissue around the orifice and are curled against an anvil. The action of curling the tines inverts the tissue near the orifice edges to expose the inside surface of the vessel or organ. Other aspects of the invention are a method and apparatus for installing an anastomosis ring in an incision or other orifice in a vessel or other organ, a method and apparatus for precisely aligning two anastomosis rings (each installed in an incision or other orifice of a different organ) and fastening the aligned rings together. The clips can be crimped onto the aligned rings, or they can be spring clips which are sprung onto the aligned rings to clamp the rings together by spring force. Also within the scope of the invention are crimping and spring clips for use in listening together two aligned anastomosis rings. In other embodiments, the invention is a method for performing an anastomosis by installing an anastomosis ring in an orifice in an organ, installing another anastomosis ring in an orifice in another organ, precisely aligning the two installed anastomosis rings, and fastening the aligned rings together.

摘要: A heart retractor links lifting of the heart and regional immobilization which stops one part of the heart from moving to allow expeditious suturing while permitting other parts of the heart to continue to function whereby coronary surgery can be performed on a beating heart while maintaining cardiac output unabated and uninterrupted. Circumflex coronary artery surgery can be performed using the heart retractor of the present invention. The retractor includes a plurality of flexible arms and a plurality of rigid arms as well as a surgery target immobilizing element. One form of the retractor can be used in minimally invasive surgery, while other forms of the retractor can accommodate variations in heart size and paracardial spacing.

摘要: A sectional cassette (10) for use in a process for harvesting and handling tissue samples for biopsy analysis is disclosed. In the procedure, a tissue biopsy sample is placed on a tissue trapping supporting material (A′) that can withstand tissue preparation procedures, and which can be cut with a microtome. The tissue is immobilized on the material, and the material and the tissue are held in the cassette (10) subjected to a process for replacing tissue fluids with wax. The tissue and supporting material are sliced for mounting on slides using a microtome. Harvesting devices and containers (200) using the filter material (202) are disclosed. An automated process is also disclosed.
