Iron sulfate supported on alumina or silica alumina and cobalt sulfate supported on alumina are catalysts used for olefin oligomerization. These new catalysts allow olefin oligomerizations to be carried out at lower temperatures than many other known catalysts. The reaction is normally carried out under sufficient pressure to keep the olefin present as a liquid. In addition, the catalysts provide excellent selectivity for the formation of lower olefins and require no water to maintain activity, thereby leading to increased productivity by avoiding problems of polymerization, coking and reactor plugging.

A process for oligomerizing olefins having 2 to 5 carbon atoms in the molecule employing a novel sulfur containing molybdenum supported catalyst composed of from about 5.0 to 11.0 weight percent molybdenum, 3.0 to 7.0 weight percent sulfur and the remainder support. The catalyst may have present additional members such as platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, cobalt, nickel, rhenium and tungsten.

A process is provided for dimerization of light olefins comprising from 2 to 4 carbon atoms which comprises contacting same at a weight hourly space velocity of from about 0.1 to about 10, a temperature of from about 32.degree.F to about 350.degree.F and a pressure of from about 200 psig to about 1000 psig with a catalyst of alumina having intimately combined therewith from about 2 to about 5 weight percent nickel and from about 1 to about 3 weight percent sulfur as a result of impregnation with nickel sulfate, said alumina being gamma, eta or a mixture thereof and said catalyst having been calcined at a temperature of from 750.degree.F to about 1150.degree.F in an inert oxygen-free, non-reducing atmosphere.
