The invention relates to polyetherurethanes which contain hydantoin rings and their use as antistatic agents for threads, fibers, foils and films produced from polymers. These polyetherurethanes which contain hydantoin rings are particularly noteworthy by combining the following advantages. The presence of the hydantoin rings gives them excellent compatibility with the polymers and in addition they impart to the polymers an antistatic property which is very resistant to washing. Another major advantage of these compounds is that they substantially improve the light fastness of the polymers, evidently due to the presence of the hydantoins.

It has been suggested that antistatic properties of fibers of polyamide could be improved by dispersing in the polyamide a small proportion of a reaction product of a tetrol compound represented by the formula:

An antistatic polyolefin composition comprises a polyolefin mixed with a N,N-bis-(hydroxyalkyl) fatty acid amide and an ionic salt of a monovalent metal. The preferred amides are of the formula where n is 7 to 17 and R and R1 are alkylene radicals of 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The amide and salt are preferably present in amount of 0.1 to 1.0% by weight of the polymer, the preferred weight ratio of amide to salt being from 1:1 to 10:1. The preferred monovalent metal is an alkali metal, e.g. lithium, potassium and sodium the preferred salts being halides, thiocyanates, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, organosulphonates and carboxylates of up to 18 carbon atoms. In the examples, N,N-bis-(hydroxyethl) lauramide, N,N - bis - (hydroxyethyl) stearamide and N,N - bis - (hydroxyethyl) caprylamide are employed. The salts used in the examples are sodium acetate, sodium butyrate, sodium caprylate, sodium laurate, sodium stearate, lithium acetate, potassium thiocyanate, sodium nitrite, potassium toluene sulphonate, sodium methane sulphonate, sodium nitrate, sodium dibutyl phosphate and potassium bromide. Polymers used in the examples are polyethylene, polypropylene and a copolymer of propylene and ethylene.

The invention relates to a composition comprising a thermoplastic, structurally crosslinked elastomeric or thermosetting polymer, which comprises (a) a polar, adsorptive inorganic or organic material in the form of fibers or particles which are in mutual contact, onto which is adsorptively bound(b) a polar antistatic agent comprising a mixture of b1) at least one polar organic compound having at least 5 carbon atoms and at least 3 heteroatoms, and b2) the salt of an inorganic protic acid, which is solvated or complexed in the polar organic compound. The invention also relates to a second composition comprising b1) a polar inorganic or organic material, b) a polar organic compound having at least 5 carbon atoms and at least 3 heteroatoms and b2) an inorganic salt, to the use of this second composition for the antistatic treatment of polymers, and to a process for preparing antistatically treated polymers.
