Abstract: A system and method for limited rate context-based eye gaze encoding includes generating, based on an outward looking camera situated in a vehicle, a first video stream of a surrounding environment to a controller. The controller generates a scene description based on the first video stream and selects a corresponding scene from a predefined list of known scenes. Further, the controller, based on the selected corresponding scene, selects a codebook of encoding and decoding parameters from a plurality of predefined codebooks. Based on an inward looking camera situated in the vehicle, a second video stream of a face of a driver to an eye tracker controller is generated, where the eye tracker controller estimates a gaze direction of the driver. Encoded data comprising the estimated gaze direction of the driver is transmitted over a bandwidth limited channel to a decoder, based on the selected codebook, the encoded data.

Abstract: A method of retrieving a lost item from a compartment to an owner of the lost item is provided. The method comprises detecting the lost item in the compartment to define an item image of the lost item relative to the compartment, updating an inventory list of lost objects, and identifying at least one potential user of the lost item. The method further comprises providing notification to the at least one potential user and providing viewable access of the item image. The method further comprises verifying ownership of the lost item to define the owner of the lost item, determining a preferred pickup location for the owner, storing the lost item at the preferred location defining a stored item, and confirming identity of the owner for retrieval of the stored item at the preferred location. The method further comprises allowing access to the stored item from the preferred location.

Abstract: An augmented reality head-up display system for displaying graphics upon a windscreen of a vehicle includes one or more image-capturing devices that capture image data of an environment surrounding the vehicle, a graphic projection device for generating images upon the windscreen of the vehicle, and a controller in electronic communication with the one or more image-capturing devices and the graphic projection device. The controller executes instructions to receive object detection data indicating a current position of objects located within the environment surrounding the vehicle. The controller executes instructions to compare the current position of the objects within the environment with a visual location of the objects within the environment determined based on the image data to identify a visually occluded object located within the environment. In response to identifying the visually occluded object, the controller determines a contextual graphic that signifies the visually occluded object.

Abstract: A method of managing operator take-over of autonomous vehicle. The method includes gathering information on an external surrounding of the autonomous vehicle; analyzing the gathered information on the external surrounding of the autonomous vehicle to determine an upcoming traffic pattern; gathering information on an operator of the autonomous vehicle; analyzing the gathered information on the operator of the autonomous vehicle to determine an operator behavior; predicting an operator action based on the determined upcoming traffic pattern and the determined operator behavior; and initiating a predetermined vehicle response based on the predicted operator action. The predicting the operator action includes comparing the determined upcoming traffic pattern with a similar historic traffic pattern and retrieving a historical operator action in response to the similar historical pattern.

Abstract: A notification system includes a memory, an output device and activity, localization, and tracking modules. The memory stores an activity history log associated with a supporting structure. The activity module: receives signals from sensors or electrical devices; and tracks activities at least one of in or within a set distance of the supporting structure to generate the activity history log. The localization module relates the activities to aspects of the supporting structure and generates corresponding localization data. The tracking module tracks states of the aspects of the supporting structure contacted at least one of directly or indirectly by one or more animate objects and determine at least one of contamination levels or sanitization levels of the aspects based on the localization data and the activity history log. The output device indicates the at least one of the contamination levels or the sanitization levels.

Abstract: A head up display system of a vehicle includes: a communication module configured to receive a period until a traffic signal of an intersection of roads will change from a first state to a second state; a distance module configured to, based on the period and a present speed of the vehicle, determine a distance in front of the vehicle where the vehicle will be when the traffic signal transitions from the first state to the second state; a light source configured to, via a windshield of the vehicle, generate a virtual display that is visible within a passenger cabin of the vehicle; and a display control module configured to, based on the distance, control the light source to include, in the virtual display, a visual indicator of a location in a path of the vehicle where the traffic signal will transition from the first state to the second state.

Abstract: An alignment system for a HUD is provided and includes a mirror, a mirror actuator, first and second light sources, an optic assembly, and a control module. The mirror actuator adjusts mirror orientation. The first light source generates a first light beam. The mirror directs the first light beam from the HUD to a combiner to generate a virtual image. The second light source generates a second light beam. The optic assembly directs the second light beam to the combiner to generate a fiducial. The control module: performs an alignment process including, based on received inputs, controlling the mirror actuator to adjust mirror orientation to adjust a position of the virtual image and align a portion of the virtual image, the fiducial and an eye of a viewer; determines a height of the eye based on a mirror angle; and displays another virtual image based on the height.

The method includes receiving rider profile information, trip information, environmental information and vehicle dynamics information, determining a probability that a rider will suffer from motion sickness during a ride based on the rider profile information, the trip information, the environmental information and the vehicle dynamics information, in response to the probability being greater than a predetermined threshold probability corresponding to a rider, performing motion sickness mitigation functions, and in response to the probability being less than the predetermined threshold probability corresponding to the rider, monitoring the rider to detect rider response information indicating whether the rider will suffer from motion sickness during the ride.
