Haze formation in additive concentrates containing boron-containing ashless dispersants is inhibited, and improvements in performance capabilities can be realized, by suitably controlling the pH of the concentrate as produced. Not only does such pH control result in no sacrifice in wear and corrosion inhibition, but it has been found possible by suitable adjustment and control of pH to actually improve the effectiveness of the concentrate in its ability to inhibit wear and corrosion. Moreover, such pH control makes possible the provision of compositions having enhanced extreme pressure properties as seen in the standard L-42 test, and improved antirust performance as seen in the standard L-33 test.

This invention relates to lubricating compositions containing hydroxyalkane phosphonic acids and derivatives thereof.Hydroxyalkane phosponic acids in the present invention can be reacted to form salts with basic materials, including detergents, dispersants and amines. These materials can be particularly useful in lubricating compositions to improve anti-wear and extreme pressure properties of lubricating formulations.The hydroxyalkane phosphonic acid is represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein Y is a phosphonic acid group or hydrogen, and R is alkyl from 1 to about 100 carbon atoms.

Non-aqueous lamellar liquid crystalline lubricant compositions comprise an organic acid component or a salt thereof, an organic amine component and a non-aqueous solvent which maintains the liquid crystalline properties of a mixture of the organic acid or salt thereof and the organic amine. The organic acid component is selected from the group consisting of alkyl phosphonic acids, aryl phosphonic acids, alkyl sulfonic acids and aryl sulfonic acids. The weight ratios of the components are such that the compositions exhibit lamellar liquid crystalline properties, the weight ratio of organic acid to organic amine is in the range of about 1:1 to about 5:1 and the solvent comprises not greater than about 75 weight percent of the composition.
