Abstract: This document discloses an exhaust gas turbocharger, which includes a turbine disk connected to a turbine disk hub. The turbine disk hub extends distally away from the turbine disk and towards a shaft that connects the turbine disk to a compressor. The shaft includes a proximal end that includes a shaft hub that extends proximally away from the shaft and towards the turbine disk hub. The turbine disk hub is coaxially connected to the shaft hub at a joint. The turbine disk hub and the shaft hub form a cavity between the turbine disk and the proximal end of the shaft. The turbocharger also includes a sleeve having an inner surface that surrounds and engages at least part of the turbine disk hub, at least part of the shaft hub and that further surrounds the joint and partially surrounds the cavity. The sleeve provides structural reinforcement for the joint and additional cooling functions beyond the cooling function provided by the cavity.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for adjusting the opening of a scroll valve of a binary flow turbine. Scroll valve adjustments are used at different engine operating conditions to improve engine performance and boost response. Scroll valve adjustments are coordinated with wastegate and EGR valve adjustments for improved engine control.

Abstract: A turbocharger includes a housing and a rotary assembly disposed within the housing and including a turbine wheel and a compressor wheel attached to one another by a shaft. A bearing is disposed in the housing and rotatably supports the shaft. The bearing includes a pair of inner bearing surfaces that engage opposite ends of the shaft and a pair of outer bearing surfaces that engage the housing. The pair of inner bearing surfaces have a first axial dimension and the pair of outer bearing surfaces have a second axial dimension that is smaller than the first axial dimension.

Abstract: In cases where an EGR device is provided in which an EGR gas is recirculated to an upstream side of a compressor, the generation of condensed water is suppressed in an intake passage at the downstream side of the compressor. In the case where the temperature of a wall surface of the intake passage estimated or detected by a temperature detector is equal to or less than a predetermined temperature, a rotational speed of a turbine is made higher than in the case where the estimated or detected temperature of the wall surface of the intake passage is higher than the predetermined temperature, and torque of an internal combustion engine is adjusted such that an amount of change in an output of the internal combustion engine at the time of the rotational speed of the turbine being thus made higher falls within a predetermined range.

Abstract: A turbocharger includes a turbine, a compressor, and a bearing housing forming a bearing bore. A bearing arrangement is disposed between a shaft interconnecting the turbine and compressor wheels, and the bearing housing. The bearing arrangement includes an outer bearing race element and an inner bearing race element rotatably disposed within the outer bearing race element. The inner bearing race element forms a hollow extension extending up to the compressor wheel, the extension having a hollow cylindrical shape that surrounds a portion of the shaft that is connected on one end to the compressor wheel and at another end is disposed adjacent to a seat formed on the extension portion around the shaft, and a nut engaged on the shaft and disposed within the extension at an offset distance from the seat.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for a boosted engine having a split exhaust system. In one example, a method comprises directing exhaust from a first cylinder group to one or more of a pre-compressor location, a post-compressor location, and an exhaust turbine, and directing exhaust from a second cylinder group to one or more of the pre-compressor location, and the exhaust turbine. Engine efficiency and knock control may be enhanced by directing exhaust gases to different locations based on engine operating conditions.
