Abstract: An energy harvester is provided for harvesting energy, and in particular electrical energy from an input vibration such as an ambient vibration. The energy harvester comprises a first mechanical amplifier responsive to the input vibration and a second mechanical amplifier coupled to the first mechanical amplifier. At least one of the first and second mechanical amplifiers comprises a parametric resonator, and a power output of the energy harvester is generated by damping the second mechanical amplifier.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method of assessing whether an individual is at high risk or low risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) progression by determining the expression level of two or more genes in a whole blood sample. Also provided are methods for treating IBD in an individual who is determined to be at high risk or low risk for IBD progression, and kits for assessing whether an individual is at high risk or low risk for IBD progression. Arrays, and methods of providing arrays, of patient-identified selected gene expression products from a whole blood sample of a patient are also provided.

Abstract: A thermal conductivity sensing device (1) is disclosed, along with a method for operation of the thermal conductivity sensing device and use of the thermal conductivity sensing device in a system for gas chromatography and a method of carrying out gas chromatography. The thermal conductivity sensing device is for use in sensing one or more gaseous components in a flowing gaseous environment. The device has a first sensor (4B) and a second sensor (4A) for exposure to the same flowing gaseous environment (G). The first sensor has an associated flow altering means (20) to affect gas flow at least at part of the surface of the first sensor, to be different to gas flow at the surface of the second sensor. Each sensor provides an output relating to heat transfer between a surface of the sensor and the gaseous environment. The device is operable to compare outputs of the first and second sensors. The sensor is able to reduce the effects of bulk convection of the flowing gas on thermal conductivity measurements.

Abstract: A method for obtaining a liquid from a porous solid phase is described. The method comprises forming a liquid seal at a first end of a porous solid phase to which a liquid is bound, wherein liquid of the liquid seal is immiscible with the liquid bound to the solid phase, and applying a pressure differential across the porous solid phase to cause the immiscible liquid to move through the porous solid phase towards a second end of the porous solid phase, thereby displacing the liquid bound to the porous solid phase towards the second end and releasing this liquid from the second end. Recovery of liquid from the solid phase using such methods is increased compared with corresponding methods in which no liquid seal is formed. In preferred embodiments, the liquid used to form the liquid seal is a mineral oil. The methods have particular application in nucleic acid extractions which utilize capture of nucleic acid to a solid phase. Kits and apparatus for performing the methods are also described.

Abstract: We describe a method of layer-by-layer deposition of a plurality of layers of material onto the wall or walls of a channel of a microfluidic device, the method comprising: loading a tube with a series of segments of solution, a said segment of solution bearing a material to be deposited; coupling said tube to said microfluidic device; and injecting said segments of solution into said microfluidic device such that said segments of solution pass, in turn, through said channel depositing successive layers of material to perform said layer-by-layer deposition onto said wall or walls of said channel. Embodiments of the methods are particularly useful for automated surface modification of plastic, for example PDMS (Poly(dimethylsiloxane)), microchannels. We also describe methods and apparatus for forming double-emulsions.
