Abstract:
Solid extrusion coating compositions for metal substrates, a method of extrusion coating a metal substrate, and a metal article are disclosed. The extrusion coating composition is a thermoplastic material and comprises: (a) a polyester having a weight average molecular weight of about 10,000 to about 50,000, and optionally, (b) a modifying resin, such as an epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalent weight of about 500 to about 15,000. The extrusion coating composition is applied to a metal substrate in an extrusion process to provide a composition film having a thickness of about 1 to about 40 microns.
Abstract:
After forming a primary powder bed (i.e., powder layer) at a toothed portion of an article, such as a gear or a spline shaft, by electrostatic powder coating process, the powder bed/layer is removed from crests of teeth in the toothed portion by a specified thickness by scraping it off while sucking up the scraped powder. Next, the electrostatic powder coating process is performed again to form a secondary powder bed/layer over the entire surface of the toothed portion. Then, the primary and secondary powder beds/layers are melted or fused by induction heating to thereby form a coating film of a substantially uniform thickness.

A method and apparatus for coating sheet material with thermoset material. In certain embodiments, first and second different induction furnaces are provided, with the coated sheet first proceeding into and through the first furnace, and then into and through the second furnace. The first furnace may be maintained at a temperature less than the second furnace, so that out-gassing of volatile materials is achieved in the first furnace and thereafter heightened cross-linking conversation rates are achieved in the second furnace at higher temperatures.

Provided is an apparatus for powder coating 1 which includes a coat-applying station 39 for applying a powder coating P on a work 3 to be coated, and a high frequency induction heating apparatus 47 for heating the work 3 covered with the powder coating P under the effect of high frequency wave and baking the powder coating P on the work at the interface defined between the powder coating and the work. Use of the apparatus 1 provides a uniform and strong coating film without any unevenness more efficiently with the relatively compact apparatus.

A process for the protective or decorative coating of a continuously moving metal sheet, in which the sheet, after having received its coating, is heated by electromagnetic induction in a tunnel oven in order to evaporate the solvents and to cure the coating. The solvents are continuously extracted from the chamber of the oven, wherein a gas at a temperature greater than the dew point of the solvents is injected into the oven and which is gastight and thermally insulated in order to keep the hot internal walls above this dew point.

A method for applying a coating solution onto a substrate to form a coated portion thereon includes a dipping device for dipping and removing the substrate into and from the coating solution; and a heating device for inductively heating the substrate while the dipping device removes the substrate from the coating solution to uniformly dry an inner surface of the coated portion, the inner surface being adjacent to the substrate. The method advantageously may include a drying device for blowing hot gases onto the coated portion of the substrate while the dipping device removes the substrate from the coating solution. The drying device for blowing hot gases onto the coated portion of the substrate includes a plurality of slits arranged so that a plurality of hot gas streams flowing through corresponding ones of the plurality of slits impinge and exert a gas pressure on the coated portion, the plurality of slits being arranged so that a collective gas pressure from all hot gas streams is uniformly applied across the coated portion along a transverse direction so that the coated portion is squeezed to a uniform thickness as the dipping device removes the substrate.

Process and apparatus for forming a plastic coating on a metal strip. A metal strip is cleaned, surface treated, coated with an electrostatically charged plastic powder in an enclosed chamber using a plurality of spray guns positioned on both sides of the strip, inductively heated to above the melting point of the powder, and maintained in an infrared heater until the fused powder is flowed into a coating having a smooth surface and a uniform thickness. Thermoplastic and thermosetting coatings, having thicknesses of at least 10 microns formed using total induction and infrared heating times of less than 60 seconds, can be fabricated without cracking.

A method of applying a synthetic resin layer to an outer surface of a metal part, comprising heating the metal part to a temperature higher than a melting point of a synthetic resin, embedding the heated metal part within a powdered mass of the synthetic resin, thereby melting a portion of the powdered mass surrounding the outer surface of the heated melt part, holding the heated metal part within the powdered mass for a time period sufficient to permit the molten portion of the powdered mass to be coated on the outer surface of the heated metal part as the synthetic resin layer, removing the metal part coated with the synthetic resin layer from the powdered mass, and maintaining the removed metal part at a temperature higher than the melting point and lower than a thermal decomposition point of the synthetic resin, to hold the deposited resin layer in a molten state for a suitable length of time, in order to allow the escape of possibly entrapped air from the resin layer.

A method of manufacturing a razor blade is disclosed wherein a polymer material is coated onto the blade edge. The polymer material is applied to the blade edge in a coating solution after which the blade is passed through a rapidly changing magnetic field in close proximity to the blade, which induces a current to generate heat for sintering the material to the blade edge.
