Processes for suppressing intrusion into a passenger compartment of a motor vehicle body by an object laterally impacting the vehicle body are also described.

A vehicle interior monitoring system to identify, locate and monitor occupants, including their parts, and other objects in the passenger compartment and objects outside of a motor vehicle, such as an automobile or truck, by illuminating the contents of the vehicle and objects outside of the vehicle with electromagnetic, and specifically infrared, radiation and using one or more lenses to focus images of the contents onto one or more arrays of charge coupled devices (CCD arrays). Outputs from the CCD arrays, are analyzed by appropriate computational means employing trained pattern recognition technologies, to classify, identify or locate the contents or external objects. In general, the information obtained by the identification and monitoring system is used to affect the operation of some other system in the vehicle. When system is installed in the passenger compartment of an automotive vehicle equipped with an airbag, the system determines the position of the vehicle occupant relative to the airbag and disables deployment of the airbag if the occupant is positioned so that he/she is likely to be injured by the deployment of the airbag.

An impact beam structure for automobile side doors is disclosed. In the impact beam structure, a protector panel is mounted to the impact beam by a plurality of guide rods, which are welded to the protector panel and pass through the guide holes of the impact beam prior to being tightened by nuts. The guide rods individually have both a stopper at the welded junction and an uneven part at a section between the impact beam and the stopper. The uneven part normally spaces the protector panel apart from the impact beam and is selectively thrust into the guide hole in the event of a side collision, thus allowing the protector panel to primarily absorb impact energy. The stopper selectively comes into contact with the impact beam, thus stopping the impact energy absorbing operation of the protector panel and allowing the impact beam to secondarily absorb the impact energy.

Improved plastic cladding and body molding parts are provided. These improved parts incorporate at least one and preferably a plurality of large gas channels within the plastic part having corresponding attachment surfaces to allow easy and efficient attachment of the improved parts to a substrate surface. The large gas channels are designed to provide sufficient attachment surfaces so that the monolithic, one-piece plastic part can be attached directly to the desired substrate surface using an adhesive system. Preferably, the adhesive system is an adhesive tape applied directly to the attachment surfaces. More preferably, the adhesive is an acrylic plastic tape applied directly to the attachment surfaces. The improved plastic cladding and body molding parts are especially adapted and suitable for use in automotive applications. A method of attaching the improved plastic cladding and body molding parts to the substrate surface is also described.

A bumper system for a go-kart has a plurality of bumper sections. The bumper section has a sufficient rigidity that displacement to one bumper section transmits motion to other bumper sections. A plurality of shock absorbers are provided, for example, rubber elements connected between the bumper sections and the frame. Consequently, impact at any one point is transmitted throughout the bumper system so that all the shock absorbers assist in absorbing the impact, rather than just the shock absorbers immediately adjacent the impact point. For the rear bumper system transverse motions guides are provided to support a rear bumper section, and to maintain the various bumper sections about a horizontal plane relative to the frame, while permitting the necessary horizontal motions, both longitudinally and laterally. The bumper sections may be connected together at their ends by pivots. Alternatively, the bumper sections may be continuous. The bumper sections may be formed from steel or a fibre reinforced composite material.

A protective guard for demountable attachment to the side of a vehicle comprising a single panel unit fabricated of a light weight material, such as cellular polystyrene, formed generally in the shape of an elongated triangle having one internal wall section and two approximately equal converging sidewalls. The interior wall is generally flat along the longitudinal edge portions and includes a channel formed down the center from one end of the panel to the other. The end portions of the panel are slightly tapered from a pre-determined point near each end of the panel where the two side walls converge. Imbedded in the interior wall of the panel are a plurality of encapsulated magnets that are used to attach and secure the panel to the vehicle's surface. Each capsule, which is generally conical in shape, includes an annular flange disposed about the wider, open end of the capsule. The opposite, narrower end of the capsule is permanently sealed and supports therein a generally thin disc shaped magnet. The sealed end of the capsule is strategically situated and integrated with the panel so that it remains absolutely flush with the interior wall of the panel to ensure that the magnetic force of each magnet is maximized upon the vehicle surface.

Each of the front and rear bumpers and the left and right side panels are interconnected by longitudinal and transverse gas circulation pipes that the gase of each air sheet can be dispersed when the shock is inflicted, thereby enhancing the shock absorption effect thereof. The gas circulation tubes are interconnected by a gas circulation controller which controls the circulation of gas.

The hollow closure may be selectively filled with or emptied of a fluid, thereby respectively expanding or retracting the protective member. In use, when in a parked position, the protective member is expanded thereby absorbing minor impacts such as outswung doors, protected shopping carts and the like. When the vehicle is in motion, the protective member is retracted, thereby reachieving aerodynamic streamlining of the automotive vehicle.
