According to one aspect, a system for sensing ethanol from human skin, that comprises at least one apparatus for sensing ethanol and a coupling matrix readout extraction unit for performing a method of extracting a coupling-matrix readout. The at least one sensing apparatus and the coupling matrix readout extraction may be mounted on a substrate. The substrate may be adapted such that it can be formed into a wearable accessory that can be worn by a human subject. When the wearable accessory is worn by the human subject such that the subject provides a skin tissue sample to the accessory, the presence or concentration of ethanol and other compounds may be determined from the vapor associated with the tissue sample.

A system includes an internal combustion engine receiving intake air from an intake manifold and providing exhaust gases to an exhaust manifold. The system further includes an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) conduit fluidly coupling the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold. The system includes a conical spring check valve disposed in the EGR conduit, the conical spring check valve having a helically wound spring including a number of turns of decreasing diameter, where each turn progresses axially in a normal flow direction of the EGR from a previous one of the turns. Each of the turns further overlaps a previous one of the turns.

An automatic antenna tuner system for radio frequency identification system includes a pulse width modulator, a microprocessor for controlling the generation of a source signal from the modulator, capacitors for receiving the source signal from amplifiers and transmitting it to an inductor, a gate communicating with the capacitors for transmitting a resonating signal from the inductor and capacitors as a carrier signal and means for gating the carrier signal with the source signal to produce a compared signal to produce a string of pulses and means for varying capacitance to increase or decrease the count of the string of pulses.

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for delivering a dosant with engine exhaust. The apparatus includes a flow-rate regulator disposed downstream from an engine exhaust manifold that operates to control a fraction of exhaust from the engine exhaust manifold. The apparatus also includes a doser disposed downstream of the flow-rate regulator that provisions a supply of dosant to the path of the controlled fraction of exhaust, which atomizes, vaporizes, disperses, mixes with, and/or delivers the dosant.

A system for estimating an auxiliary-injected fuel quantity includes a fuel injector for injecting fuel into an engine, a fuel pump supplying fuel to a fuel collection unit that then supplies fuel to the fuel injector, and a control circuit that generates an auxiliary-injected fuel quantity estimation model by disabling the fuel pump prior to fuel injection, and enabling the fuel pump to resume fuel pumping following fuel injection, by the fuel injector, determines a first pressure in the fuel collection unit after stabilization of the fuel pressure therein following disablement of the fuel pump and prior to the fuel injection, determines a second pressure in the fuel collection unit after the fuel injection and prior to resuming pumping of fuel by the fuel pump, and forms the model as a function of the first and second pressures and an injector on-time for a number of different engine operating conditions.

An improved fuel injection system is provided which incorporates a common rail and a plurality of unit injectors which function together to efficiently produce various injection rate shapes and different combinations of discreet and blended pilot, main, post and after treatment fuel injection events during a single injection. The fuel injection system effectively permits flexible, responsively timed, square shaped, discreet low to mid pressure level injections utilizing the fuel pressure of the common rail while also allowing the unit injector portion to function independently to produce flexible and responsively timed and pressure controlled, triangular shaped high pressure fuel injection events and to recover excess energy. In one embodiment, a separate common rail pump is avoided by utilizing the unit injector plunger to replace fuel into the common rail which was previously injected.

A fuel injection system is disclosed for an internal combustion engine that has multiple combustion chambers and a camshaft which cyclically imparts pressurization energy to and recovers pressurization energy from fuel being supplied to the engine. The fuel injection system includes a plurality of unit injectors, a camshaft linkage which simultaneously reciprocates pressurizing plungers of a set of at least two unit injectors and an interconnecting line which allows selective fluid interconnection between fuel pressurization chambers formed within the unit injectors. The interconnection line allows fluid linkage of the volume of fuel which is simultaneously pressurized and depressurized within the interconnected fuel pressurization chambers of a first set of unit injectors.

An apparatus and method for determining start of fuel injection (SOI), preferably in an open nozzle fuel injection system, comprises means for obtaining injector train load data as a function of crank shaft timing, and a computer for sampling the data, performing a smoothing operation thereon, computing a first derivative of the smoothed injector train load data samples with respect to crank shaft timing, computing a maximum value of the first derivative, computing a predefined fraction of the maximum value of the first derivative, and mapping the predefined fraction of the maximum value of the first derivative to its corresponding crank shaft angle, wherein the corresponding crank shaft angle defines the crank shaft angle, measured in degrees relative to piston top dead center, at which SOI occurs. In an alternative embodiment, the smoothing operation and computation of the first derivative may be combined into a single operation.
Abstract:
A ceramic-metal composite structure which minimizes tensile ceramic loads and accommodates differences in thermal expansion characteristics between a metal member and a ceramic member without reliance on precise feature control for either member. The composite includes a mechanical retainer which allows a loose fitting relationship between the metal and ceramic members. The ceramic member is secured within a receiving bore in the metal member by the retainer in a manner which eliminates the need for precise machining of the ceramic and metal members. The metal member may be configured to accept either an internal or an external mechanical retainer element. The composite ceramic-metal structure of the present invention finds particular utility in forming a durable wear-resistant interface in internal combustion engine actuator or actuating components, such as compression brake master pistons.
