摘要: The method manufactures high-purity ferromagnetic sputter targets by cryogenic working the sputter target blank at a temperature below at least −50° C. to impart at least about 5 percent strain into the sputter target blank to increase PTF uniformity of the target blank. The sputter target blank is a nonferrous metal selected from the group consisting of cobalt and nickel; and the nonferrous metal has a purity of at least about 99.99 weight percent. Finally, fabricating the sputter target blank forms a sputter target having an improved PTF uniformity arising from the cryogenic working.

摘要: The method forms a sputter target assembly by attaching a sputter target to an insert and applying a bond metal layer between the insert and a backing plate. Then pressing the insert and backing plate together forms a solid state bond with the bond metal layer, attaches the insert to the backing plate and forms at least one cooling channel between the insert and the backing plate. A filler metal secures the outer perimeter of the insert to the backing plate in order to eliminate leakage from the cooling channel during sputtering of the sputter target.

摘要: A transducer for use in an ultrasonic imaging system. The transducer includes a plurality of acoustically and electrically independent sub-arrays, wherein each sub-array includes a plurality of transmitting and receiving elements and a backing assembly. Each sub-array is capable of transmitting lines of ultrasonic energy and receiving echo lines containing information for generating an image concurrent with the operation of the other sub-arrays. The sub-arrays are mounted onto the backing assembly to form a single mechanical unit with the backing assembly providing electrical and acoustic isolation between the cub-arrays. An acoustic insulator is placed between each pair of adjacent sub-arrays to isolate each sub-array from adjacent sub-arrays.

摘要: A target assembly in which the sputtering material is not soldered or otherwise metallurgically bonded to a backing plate. Rather, the target, which is homogeneously manufactured of sputtering material, is mechanically coupled (e.g., with bolts) to an adapter, which is itself permanently affixed to the chamber. As a result, the target can be easily uncoupled from the chamber and replaced, without also requiring removal and replacement of a backing plate.

摘要: A device for the preparation of powdered metal samples for oxygen analysis includes a mold with a central cavity accessible through a tapered throat region on the top of the mold. A tin foil sheet is placed in the tapered throat region and pressed into the cavity and thereby formed into a generally cup shaped configuration. A measured amount of the powdered metal is poured into the cup shaped tin foil within the cavity of the mold. A tweezers is used to fold the tin foil over thereby encapsulating the powdered metal within the foil. The sample is then tamped to form a tightly packed specimen for analysis. The diameter of the cavity corresponds to the diameter of the crucible in the oxygen analyzer to thereby consistently provide an appropriately sized powdered metal sample with a minimum of operator time. The mold is preferably constructed in two pieces with an upper portion removable from a base portion. After the tin foil is folded to encapsulate the powdered metal sample within the cavity of the mold, the upper portion is removed from the base to expose the sample for removal by the operator with the tweezers from the base.

摘要: A system for detecting railroad cars in a moving train. The cars are assumed to be of the type having two wheel trucks, each with at least two axles arranged adjacent to each other such that the maximum distance between the axles of a single truck is less than the center distance between facing axles of two trucks of a single car. The system includes a device for measuring the distance between successive axles as a train of cars moves in one direction along a track, a device for comparing each measured distance with the maximum axle distance for a truck, and a device for determining whether the axle spacing of a first truck equals the axle spacing of a second truck after the maximum axle distance for a truck has been exceeded. In this way, an individual car is detected upon identification of two identical truck assemblies which are separated by an axle spacing that is greater than the maximum permissible axle distance in a truck.
