A radiation-curable laminating adhesive is provided which contains a) at least one urethane (meth)acrylate oligomer and b) at least one additional (meth)acrylate-functionalized component selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid-functionalized ester-containing (meth)acrylate monomers and polybutadiene poly(meth)acrylates. The adhesive may also contain other components such as (meth)acrylic polyol (meth)acrylates. Flexible packaging laminates may be obtained by using the aforedescribed adhesive to adhere thin polymeric and/or metallic films together, the adhesive being exposed to an amount of radiation effective to cure the adhesive.

Adhesive compositions useful for laminating cellulosic substrates are formulated using an aqueous emulsion of a vinyl ester polymer such as polyvinyl acetate, one or more monomers or oligomers functionalized with (meth)acrylate groups, and a photoinitiator. The adhesive is cured by drying and exposing the adhesive to UV or visible light and is particularly useful for attaching clear films to cellulosic substrates such as paper and boxboard (e.g., in the manufacture of envelopes or folding cartons having windows).

A robust, two component adhesive for laminating flexible packaging material comprising a mixture of Component A and Component B. Component A comprises an isocyanate-functionalized compound. Component B comprises a mixture of a high functionality polyol containing at least four hydroxyl groups per molecule with at least two primary OH groups on the molecule and two secondary OH groups on the molecule and a trifunctional polyol containing three OH groups on the molecule. Component B can contain a difunctional polyol containing two OH groups on the molecule. The adhesive is robust and retains desirable properties when used at varying A:B mix ratios better than conventional laminating adhesives used at the same mix ratios.

A multilayer laminated structure suitable for use in flexible laminate packaging such as retort pouches contains a sealable layer and an imaging layer. The imaging layer is capable of recording a latent image (by image-wise exposure to actinic radiation, for example) that can be activated to form an image (for example, by operation of an externally applied agent such as pressure and/or heat upon the imaging layer). The sealable layer is utilized to form pouches and other containers from the multilayer laminated structure.

When the laminating adhesive is subjected to an effective amount of pressure (for example, the pressure applied when laminating flexible films together using nip rollers), the catalyst (which may be, for example, a dialkyl tin dicarboxylate) is released from encapsulation and is made available to catalyze the polyurethane-forming reaction between the isocyanate groups and the active hydrogen-functionalized groups in the adhesive mixture.

A two component laminating adhesive is provided, wherein one component contains at least one isocyanate-functionalized compound and the other component contains one or more 1,4:3,6 dianhydrohexitols. A laminate may be formed by combining the two components to provide an adhesive and then using the adhesive to adhere one polymeric film or metallic foil to another polymeric film or metallic foil. The adhesive layer between the film and/or foil layers of the laminate is then cured. The adhesives exhibit faster green strength development and higher final bond strength as compared to conventional two component laminating adhesives not containing any 1,4:3,6 dianhydrohexitol as a coreactant.

Isocyanate-terminated prepolymer possessing ionized or easily ionizable groups is reacted with NH.sub.2 OH to form a polyurethane possessing urea-urethane linkages corresponding to the formula: ##STR1## The waterborne polyurethanes are useful in adhesive, coating and ink formulations and in the flexible package industry.
