An improved process for the production of high viscosity lubricating oils obtained by reacting olefins over ZSM-5 type zeolites at elevated temperatures and pressures in order to obtain a liquid product and thereafter recovering a lube oil fraction from said liquid product is disclosed. The improvement resides in the use of large crystal ZSM-5 which has been found to enhance the viscosity index of lubes produced from olefins.

A catalytic process is provided for cracking a hydrocarbon charge stock containing aromatic nuclei components and non-aromatic nuclei components which involves contacting such chargestock with a catalyst composition having an alkali metal content less than about 1.5 weight percent and containing a mixture of faujasite and mordenite in which contacting takes place under catalytic cracking conditions of such severity that the conversion level exceeds that attributable to conversion of the non-aromatic nuclei portion of the chargestock. Under such conditions, the coke yield is substantially lower than would be obtained with the same catalyst in the absence of mordenite at the same level of conversion.

A process for catalytically cracking a hydrocarbon feed in a reaction zone under catalytic cracking conditions in the absence of added hydrogen with a catalyst comprising a conventional cracking catalyst. The improvement comprises adding to the conventional cracking catalyst a thermally treated zeolite having a mole ratio of SiO.sub.2 :Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 of about 10:1 to 100:1 and a constraint index of about 1 to 12. Thermal treatment reduces the additive zeolite's alpha activity to about 1 to 10 prior to use.

There are provided aromatic conversion reactions for preparation of dialkyl benzenes, such as xylene and ethyltoluene, of enhanced para isomer content with a zeolitic catalyst composition of improved shape selectivity. The catalysts comprise certain zeolites which have been calcined at a high temperature of at least 649.degree. C. (i.e., 1200.degree. F.). These zeolites have a silica/alumina ratio of at least about 12 and a constraint index within the approximate range of 1 to 12. Examples of such zeolites include ZSM-5 and ZSM-11.

An improved moving bed continuous catalytic cracking process for cracking hydrocarbon feedstocks, such as gas oil, in the absence of added hydrogen, which includes the use of a minute amount of dispersed platinum supported directly on a cracking catalyst. The trace of platinum induces a substantial increase in the heat efficiency with which coke on catalyst is converted to CO.sub.2 in the regenerator section with minimal or no detriment to the cracking reaction.
