This invention covers a process for converting a feed comprising at least one lower aliphatic alcohol having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a corresponding ether of such an alcohol to hydrocarbon products comprising linear olefins. The process comprises contacting the feed in a reaction zone with a catalyst comprising material having a large crystal ferrierite aluminosilicate structure. An effluent is withdrawn from the reaction zone, which comprises linear olefins. Linear olefins may then be separated from the effluent. The aliphatic alcohol having from 1 to 3 carbons is generally methanol and the preferred ether is dimethyl ether. ZSM-35 is the preferred large crystal ferrierite structure of this invention.

There is provided a catalytic oligomerization process. The process involves the use of a catalyst comprising an acidic solid. The acidic solid may comprise a Group IVB metal oxide, such as zirconia, modified with an oxyanion of a Group VIB metal, such as tungsten. The oligomers produced by this process may be hydrogenated to produce thermally stable lubricants and lubricant additives, gasoline and diesel.

There is provided a method for preparing an acidic solid oxide having a reduced particle density, where the acidic solid oxide comprises a Group IVB metal oxide modified with an anion or oxyanion of a Group VIB metal. An example of this acidic solid oxide is zirconia modified with tungstate. The acidic solid oxide having a reduced particle density is prepared by coprecipitating the Group IVB metal oxide along with the anion or oxyanion of the Group VIB metal in the presence of a salt. This acidic solid oxide is particularly effective as a paraffin isomerization catalyst.

A method of synthesizing an olefin epoxidation catalyst comprises the step of treating a porous crystalline aluminosilicate material having an X-ray diffraction pattern including d-spacing maxima at 12.4.+-.0.25, 6.9.+-.0.15, 3.57.+-.0.07 and 3.42.+-.0.07 Angstrom, such as MCM-22, with a dealuminating agent under conditions effective to remove framework aluminium from the material and produce a dealuminated product. The dealuminated product is then treated with a titanium-containing material under conditions effective to insert titanium into the dealuminated product and produce a titanium-containing, dealuminated catalyst composition.The resultant catalyst is useful in the epoxidation of olefins, such as propylene and cyclohexene, with hydrogen peroxide and organic hydroperoxides.

There is provided a catalytic method for converting nitrogen oxides to nitrogen (i.e., N.sub.2). The catalyst for this method comprises an acidic solid component comprising a Group IVB metal oxide modified with an oxyanion of a Group VIB metal and further comprising at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Group IB, Group IVA, Group VB, Group VIIB, Group VIII, and mixtures thereof. An example of this catalyst is zirconia, modified with tungstate, and iron. This method may be used for reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides from waste gases, including industrial exhaust gases and automobile exhaust gases. In a particular embodiment, nitrogen oxides in waste gases may be reacted with ammonia before the waste gases are discharged to the atmosphere.
