The method utilizes a flow through type honeycomb catalyst having parallel through-cells and (1) a cross-sectional area at the inlet part of an exhaust gas cut by a face vertical to the direction of the through-cells of 10 to 100 cm.sup.2, preferably 20 to 80 cm.sup.2, per liter of the displacement of the engine,(2) an hydraulic diameter of the through-cells of 1.00 to 2.00 mm, preferably 1.10 to 1.40 mm, and(3) the percentage of open frontal area at the inlet part of the exhaust gas of 40 to 95%, preferably 50 to 85%.

There is provided a Diesel engine exhaust gas-purifying catalyst which comprises (1) a catalytic component comprising titania having dispersed and deposited thereon at least one noble metal selected from palladium, platinum and rhodium, and (2) a refractory three dimensional structure as a carrier. This catalyst is excellent in the performance of removal by combustion at low temperature of harmful components such as uncalcined hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in addition to carbonic fine particles, and moreover has only low ability to oxide sulfur dioxide, whereby formation of sulfates can be inhibited.

A process for purifying an exhaust gas using such a catalyst is also included. By using the catalyst, NOx in an exhaust gas containing much oxygen such as exhaust gas of diesel engines can be efficiently removed and oxidation of SO2 under high-temperature conditions can be suppressed.

A method for manufacturing a high-pressure discharge lamp includes a process step in which a sealing portion is formed out of a side tube portion of a glass pipe that is designed for use in a discharge lamp. In the step of forming the sealing portion, a compound glass tube, which is composed of an outer tube made of a first glass and an inner tube made of a second glass whose softening point is lower than that of the first glass, is inserted into the side tube portion, which is also formed of the first glass. The side tube portion is then heated so that the side tube portion is brought in tight contact with the compound glass tube. Thereafter, at least the sealing portion is heated at a temperature higher than the strain point temperature of the second glass portion.
