The present invention is directed to processes for preparing supported metal catalysts comprising one or more catalytically active metals applied to a porous catalyst support and to processes that use such catalysts. The process requires the formation of an organic complex during the manufacture of the catalyst which after its formation is either partially or fully decomposed before reduction if the metal to form the catalyst. The catalysts have high levels of metal dispersion and uniform distribution of catalytically active metals on the support. The catalysts obtained form the processes are particularly effective in catalysing Fischer-Tropsch reactions and as adsorbants for the removal or organosulfur compounds from hydrocarbons.

For example, the process can be used to produce dimethyl carbonate from dimethoxy methane. The method uses a unitized pellet powder catalyst comprising a metal hydrogeneration component, a first catalytic component selected from 8, 10 and 12 ring moleular sieves and mixtures thereof, and a second amorphous isomerization component which is an amorphous inorganic oxide. Importantly, the ratio of feed and second components are present in a predetermined ratio to provide a preselected acidity favoring one of VI or yield resulting from the hydroisomerization.

Where rim type catalyst are preferred, a molten salt starting material is used. For non-rim type catalyst, such as powdered catalyst, solution salt starting materials may be used. The catalyst is prepared without high temperature calcination of the catalyst before reduction by reducing the salt directly on the support to the metal. During the reduction step, the heating rate is a slow single steady heating rate.
