A golf ball is composed of at least a pair of adjacent concentric solid layers or three adjacent concentric solid layers. In the former case, the outer solid layer is composed of a matrix and non-metallic high-hardness grains having hardness higher than that of the matrix which has a Shore D range of 36-40. In the later case, the intermediate solid layer is composed of a matrix and high-hardness grains having hardness higher than that of the matrix. The high-hardness grains have a Shore D hardness in the range of 50-70 and penetrate the corresponding solid layer in normal directions. The golf ball can provide a player with different feels on impact depending on the direction of an external force applied thereto when the golf ball is hit.

A composite panel is provided which includes a resin matrix having embedded therewithin alternating layers of particulates and flexible sheeting. The composite panel is capable of supporting its own weight and exhibits impact resistance and shatter resistance. Preferably, the resin is transparent, the particulates are decorative, and the flexible sheeting becomes transparent upon curing of the resin. The composite panels are included within articles such as tables, desks, other furniture, vertical partitions, decorative panels, doors, windows and floors. Also included is a method of making the composite panels by molding layers of these materials within an open mold.

A polymeric composite structure having a polymeric shell layer with a finish-side and a non-finish side and a cross-linked thermosetting polymeric backing layer and method of manufacturing thereof is provided. The cross-linked thermosetting polymeric backing layer is simultaneously molded to conform to the shape of and bonded directly to essentially the entire non-finish side of the polymeric shell layer. The method includes forming the polymeric shell having a finish-side and non-finish side into a suitable shape, placing the shell into a mold, and introducing an uncured blended mixture of unsaturated thermosetting polymeric backing material and cross-linking promoter into the mold to force the backing material to directly coat the non-finish side of the shell. Curing the molded thermosetting polymeric backing material at a suitable temperature and sufficient time allows hardening and cross-linking of the thermosetting polymeric material and bonding directly to the non-finish side of the polymeric shell to permit demolding of the composite structure without damage.

A material suitable for thermosetting includes a collection of hollow particles adhesively mixed with a thermosetting resin in such proportions that the mixture exists in a granular form and may be converted by thermosetting into a fused solid mass having a density not greater than 0.5 grams per cubic centimeter.The particles may be glass microbubbles or phenolic microballoons and the resin may be a hardenable Friedel-Crafts resin. The material according to the invention is more suitable for packing into shaped cavities than known resins including those containing filler particles.

Plastic containers having improved physical properties are prepared from a composite billet having an outer peripheral area composed of a thermoplastic resin and an inner central core portion composed of the thermoplastic resin modified with a material which imparts improved physical properties such as reduced gas permeability or increased stiffness or rigidity to the resin. The composite billet is molded into a container wherein the billet core is formed into the sidewalls and bottom of the container and the peripheral portion is formed into a flexible thermoplastic flange surrounding the open end of the container which can be doubled seamed to a metal end closure without fracture.
