The multiwall panel comprises, a top sheet, a bottom sheet, a rib disposed between and connected to the top sheet and the bottom sheet, and a micro-scale surface feature disposed on a surface of the multiwall panel, wherein the micro-scale surface feature comprises a width measured at a base of the surface feature, wherein the width is about 30 micrometers to about 3 millimeters. The structural members are made crushable by incorporating an initiator into the structural members. An apparatus for making expandable honeycomb structures suitable for use as window coverings. In one embodiment, folded tubular strips with adhesive lines are fed continuously through a cutter which cuts them into predetermined lengths. The cut strips are then accelerated to a stacker for further processing before the next cut strip arrives. In another embodiment, webs of material are fed continuously in a downstream direction, adhesive lines are applied, a middle web is slitted into strips, and the strips bonded along opposite edges to the outer webs. By choosing for the outer webs transparent or porous material, and for the middle web opaque material, a light or air controlling honeycomb structure results.

This invention relates to improvements in the method by which elongate frame elements such as the spars in aircraft wings are fastened to the skin panels covering same where these skin panels are of the sandwich type having inner and outer facesheets with a core bonded therebetween, such method consisting of preparing the panel to receive its frame elements by cutting elongate grooves spanwise through the inner facesheet and the core therebeneath while leaving the outer facesheet intact; bridging the gap thus produced in the inner facesheet with one bundle of filaments adhesively bonded thereto, the latter being contained in a woven connector in the form of a strap or band running lengthwise of the groove, and this filament bundle forming an endless strand of yarn that is laid back and forth transversely across the gap in side-by-side parallel rows but which are parted at intervals for the side-by-side lays of at least one other similar yarn strand to pass therebetween in intersecting relation; adhesively-bonding the skin panel core exposed within the groove to one or both sides of the frame element located proximal thereto using two endless strands of yarn laid back and forth to define a pair of intersecting webs arranged in spaced substantially parallel relation to one another that form a part of the connector and pass through the spaces between the first-mentioned yarn strands.

A shaped article is formed of thermoplastic sheeting which consists of a pair of sheets of thermoplastic material spaced apart and interconnected by longitudinally extending ribs. The combination of the sheets and the ribs form elongated passageways in the sheeting. Individual sections of the sheeting have the ends of the passageways sealed closed so that a gaseous medium, such as air, is trapped in the passageways. The sheeting is formed in an extrusion process with one of the sheets having a greater thickness than the other. The individual sections of the sheeting are formed into a shaped article with the sealed character of the passageways being maintained so that the sheets remain in spaced relation in the shaped sections. The difference in thickness between the sheets is selected so that, following the shaping operation, both sheets have substantially the same thickness.

A method of molding fiber glass for structural applications to provide a unitary structure having outer skins separated by a plurality of ribs or trusses, whereby the skins and the ribs are prestressed. The outer dimensions can be made in virtually any shape dependent upon the shape of the mold in which the structure is fabricated, and the interior of the structure between the ribs is hollow. The method also makes possible the fabrication of tubular or semitubular members having a prestressed skin but no interior ribs. The method involves the use of a plurality of elastomeric bags or tubular members which are pressurized during a heating and molding cycle and which contribute to the prestressing of the fiber glass elements. In addition, the invention involves the method by which the various laminates are laid up and the manner in which the elastomeric bags interact with the laminates, so laid up, during the molding cycle.
