A controller for mechanically setting a diesel engine's air/fuel ratio at a stoichiometric value to reduce black smoke emissions by regulating the quantity of fuel injected into a diesel engine's combustion chamber in response to the quantity of air flow to the engine's cylinder consists of an air flow sensor device and a modulator. The air flow sensor device has a venturi tube located along the engine's air intake conduit, and the modulator is in air communication with the venturi tube via a hollow hose. The modulator is located between a fuel control device, such as an automobile's accelerator pedal, and the engine's fuel injection pump. The modulator consists of an outer shell, internal diaphragm, return spring, push-pull rod and air valve system. The diaphragm divides the modulator's interior cavity into a front chamber and a rear chamber which communicates with the venturi tube. The return spring is located in the rear chamber and urges the diaphragm forwardly so as to expand or enlarge the rear chamber and to contract or diminish the size of the front chamber. One end of the push-pull rod, which is generally axially aligned with the return spring, passes through the front of the modulator's outer shell and connects to the diaphragm; and, the other end of the push-pull rod is operatively connected to control levers for the fuel injector and the accelerator pedal. The air valve system is located between the rear chamber and the outer shell of the front chamber, and is operatively connected to the control levers. The air valve system includes a front valve seat, rear valve seat and an air duct which provides air communication between the ambient and the front and rear chambers.

A pneumatic diaphragm control element for a fuel injection apparatus for internal combustion engines, in particular for supercharged diesel engines, has a thrust rod that is axially displaceable between two end stop counter to the force of a restoring spring, which thrust rod acts upon a control member of the fuel injection apparatus and is connected to a pressure-actuated diaphragm. One end stop determines the position assumed by the thrust rod when there is no pressure and is embodied as a stop screw for the thrust rod. The second end stop defines the position assumed by the thrust rod with maximal pressure being exerted on the diaphragm, and to this end cooperates with a counterpart stop that is adjustably coupled with the thrust rod. For better adaptation of the regulating characteristic, the counterpart stop is embodied as a pre-stressed spring assembly with two stop positions, such that when the first stop position is attained, after the spring pre-stressing is overcome, a further displacement travel (S.sub.2) of the thrust rod until the second stop position is attained is available.

A fuel injection pump according to the present invention is provided with a spill passage and an escape passage which are connected to a pump chamber. Disposed in the middle of the spill passage is a solenoid valve, which is adapted to open the spill passage to spill fuel in the pump chamber to the low-pressure side at predetermined times while the fuel in the pump chamber is pressurized by a pump plunger, thereby adjusting the delivery of compressed fuel from the fuel injection pump. The escape passage is formed in the pump plunger so as to be coaxial therewith. One end of the escape passage communicates with the pump chamber, while the other end opens to the outer peripheral surface of the pump plunger. An escape ring is fitted on the outer peripheral surface of the pump plunger, whereby the opening of the escape passage is opened when the pump plunger reaches a predetermined compression stroke.

The distributor injection pump is provided with a full-load stop dependent on charge pressure or atmospheric pressure, which cooperates with the system comprising a centrifugal adjuster and a governor lever group and, regardless of the sleeve position of a centrifugal adjuster, determines the position of the tensioning lever counter to the force of a governing spring and an idling spring with the aid of a control member resting on the tensioning lever. A fuel quantity control apparatus of a supercharged diesel engine with safety measures comprises a fuel injection pump capable of increasing the fuel quantity according to the degree of supercharging, a detector for detecting the temperature in a combustion chamber or the temperature of the exhaust gas, a control circuit receiving an output of the detector, and a three-way valve driven by the control circuit to control the amount of the increase of the fuel quantity. Through the use of the apparatus when the detected temperature reaches a predetermined abnormal temperature, the amount of increase of the fuel quantity can be made zero or decreased and accidents such as melting or damage of the engine by abnormal rise of the temperature in the combustion chamber or of the temperature of the exhaust gas can be prevented.
