The adjusting element (3) is controlled as a function of an accelerator pedal position. In a rocking-free situation in which the vehicle wheel (5) is to be moved from a depression (6) by alternating deflection and release of the accelerator pedal (8), the driver produces a cyclically fluctuating drive torque at vehicle wheel (5). The accelerator pedal position is continually monitored and upon recognizing a beginning or imminently beginning reduction of the accelerator pedal deflection or a parameter derived therefrom, an imminent full release of the deflection of the accelerator pedal (8) is concluded and the adjusting element (3) is actuated in anticipation so that the vehicle wheel (5) is immediately freed from a drive torque that has been active until then.

The vehicle has a drive-train with an automatic drive torque adjusting element, which transmits torque to a wheel, and a rotational speed and direction sensor system for detecting movement of the vehicle such that when the accelerator pedal is biased to a position different from its non-actuated position a desired drive torque can be produced. The torque adjusting element can be controlled based on the accelerator pedal position in relation to the drive torque that can be produced by the driver, and, in a rocking-free process, alternating deflection and release of the accelerator pedal causes the drive torque to fluctuate. With the rotational speed and direction sensor system, the drive torque adjusting element is controlled to suppress drive torque transmission if the travel direction of a current unpowered vehicle movement is not the same as a forthcoming power-driven vehicle movement.

A shuttle shifting method for a continuously variable transmission automatically selects a manner of shuttle shifting as a function of certain monitored conditions. As one alternative, the direction of operation of the transmission is changed prior to reducing the vehicle speed to zero, and tilt of a swash plate of the hydrostatic power unit of the transmission is held substantially constant, for achieving fast, smooth shifts at faster starting and ending vehicle speeds, without coming to a complete stop. In another alternative, for slower starting and ending speeds, or other conditions such as a temperature condition is present, the vehicle is stopped by changing swash plate angle before effecting a directional change of the transmission and the swash plate.

The vehicle includes a control device 100 for outputting to the generator inverter 6 an instruction to increase the amount of power generated by the generator motor 5 when the voltage of the electrical storage device 3 is equal to or lower than a maximum voltage level and a speed signal of the traveling motor 7 given upon switching of the forward/reverse switching device 103 is equal to or lower than a predetermined speed.
