An ultrasonically welded seam formed in thin, semi-crystalline films is provided. In one example embodiment, the seam may include a welded zone flanked by one or more reinforcing perimeter beads, to increase the seam's peel strength and elongation-to-break properties. In one or more embodiments, the seam may be formed by using one or more heat-carrier layers during the ultrasonic sealing of semi-crystalline film layers to generate heat and transfer excess heat across a portion of their surface area and into the semi-crystalline film layers being sealed. The heat-carrier layers enables the film seam to extend wider than the width of the sonotrode and anvil surface areas, creating a reinforcing seam perimeter bead which greatly outperforms prior ultrasonically welded seams of semi-crystalline films.

Linear movement of the tool assembly towards the rack (10) engages the die plate (324) against the rack (10) and punches the punches (322) through the cutting holes of the die plate (324) to punch a plurality of sealing sections from the foil sheet (131) and to press and seal each of the sealing sections against a top end of each of the plurality of sample storage tubes (20) in the rack (10).

A thin sealing device (230) which is resistant to damage caused by foreign material (700) is disclosed. The thin sealing device (230) has an internal heating element. The thin sealing device has a blunt edge (236), which has a radius smaller than that of the heating element. A thermocouple is placed in a cavity (235) near this blunt edge (236) to monitor the temperature at the point of sealing. In some embodiments, the thin sealing device (230) is pivotably attached to the side sealing machine at its leading (upstream) edge. The trailing (downstream) edge of the thin sealing device (230) is moved by means of a compressible force, such as an air cylinder (660). In this way, the air in the cylinder (660) pushes the thin sealing device (230) downward into the plane of the film (237). However, a foreign object (700) located on the film can overcome the force of the air cylinder (660), thereby lifting the thin sealing device (230) out of the path of the film (237).

In einem Eintrittsbereich (9) werden die Einzel-Faserbänder (4) in die Heiz-Druckbeaufschlagungseinrichtung (7) nebeneinander so gefördert, dass benachbarte Seitenkanten der zusammengeführten Einzel-Faserbänder (4) in Stoßbereichen nebeneinander anliegen. Die nebeneinander geförderten Einzel-Faserbänder (4) werden mit der Heiz-Druckbeaufschlagungseinrichtung (7) auf eine Temperatur oberhalb eines Schmelzpunktes des Polymers geheizt. Dieses Heizen erfolgt über eine gesamte Breite der Einzel-Faserbänder (4) quer zu deren Förderrichtung. Mit der Heiz-Druckbeaufschlagungseinrichtung wird ein Druck auf die nebeneinander geförderten, geheizten Einzel-Faserbänder (4) aufgebracht. Die zusammengeführten Einzel-Faserbänder (4) werden in einem Bearbeitungstemperaturbereich oberhalb des Polymer-Schmelzpunktes gehalten, bis die Stoßbereiche der zusammengeführten Einzel-Faserbänder (4) miteinander verschweißt sind. Die zum Breit-Faserband (2) miteinander verschweißten Einzel-Faserbänder (4) werden anschließend abgekühlt. The multilayer (6) is laminated by a calender of a hot laminating apparatus, the calender comprising a pair of counter- rotating heated cylinders (1, 2) with parallel axes defining a lamination gap (5) therebetween, the height of which is controlled in a closed loop mode by a position control system comprising hydraulic actuators (7, 8) connected to a movable cylinder (2) of said pair of counter-rotating heated cylinders (1, 2). During lamination of the multilayer (6) a detection sensor (10) allows to detect incoming splices (11) of the reinforcement ribbon (6") upstream of the lamination gap (5). The control system is then switched from a position control mode to a pressure control mode, according to which the pressure in the supply circuit of the hydraulic actuators (7, 8) is adjusted independent of the height of the lamination gap (5). This control mode is maintained for the time a single splice (11) needs to cross the lamination gap (5) and the position control mode is restored after the passage of each splice through the lamination gap (5).
