An improved membrane electrode assembly (“MEA”) for an electrochemical fuel cell comprises coextensive ion exchange membrane and electrode layers and a rigid fluid impermeable integral seal comprising a sealant material impregnated into the porous electrode layers in sealing regions of the MEA. The integral seal envelops the peripheral region including the side edge of the MEA. The integral seal can circumscribe the electrochemically active area of the MEA and can also extend laterally beyond the edge of the MEA. An integral seal can also be provided around any openings, such as manifold openings, that are formed inside or outside the MEA. The seal has sealing features formed therein, such as raised ribs. Sealing features can be formed from the rigid sealant material or from resilient sealant material applied to the surface of the integral seal.

A plurality of parallel openings are formed in a first material layer on a first substrate to expose a second material layer underneath. Methods and apparatus for forming microstructures in the surface of polymeric web materials for use as optical memory substrates. The microstructures may be formed by laminating a hot stamper to a web of material with a selective time/temperature profile. The stamper may be heated to melt flow the surface of the web and stabilize before separation. The stamper may be carried by a support that is independent of the press. The web of polymeric material may be provided with a flow enhancer to improve image formation. Also described herein are methods and apparatus for making optical memory modules, such as disks, which include novel stampers, coating applicators, and finishing systems.

A reclosable packaging bag comprises a main bag body having an opening portion and at least one heat-sealed portion; and a linear fastener provided on the opening portion of the main bag body. The linear fastener is provided along the opening portion of the main bag body by an insert injection molding so as not to extend to the heat-sealed portions. A method for manufacturing the bag comprises the three steps. First, the first and second linear fastening members are formed on a prescribed position of a sheet of film material by an insert injection molding so as to be spaced from each other. These fastening members are engageable with each other to form a linear fastener. Second, the sheet of film material is folded in two so that the fastening members can engage with each other. Third, each of opposite portions of the sheet of film material thus folded is heat-sealed to form side heat-sealed portions.

A heat sealing wheel assembly of a shrink wrap machine reduces thermoplastic film waste during the side cutting and sealing process. The relative diameters of the heat wheel and heating hub of the heat sealing wheel assembly are configured to create an annular region towards the outer circumference of the heat wheel. This creates a space to permit closer engagement of the gripping mechanism for grasping and guiding the edge of thermoplastic film next to the point of contact of the opposing heat wheel edges, and avoids the obstruction normally caused by the heating hub. The closer gripping engagement reduces the amount of film that must extend out from the point of sealing contact of the heat wheels, resulting in less waste during the side sealing process.
