A lubricating oil composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and an additive system comprising (A) from about 0.1 to about 5 % by weight of a detergent composition comprising at least two metal overbased compositions wherein said detergent composition consists essentially of (A-1) at least one alkali metal overbased detergent and (A-2) at least one calcium overbased detergent, wherein the ratio of total base number on a per 100 TBN and diluent-free basis contributed by the alkali metal detergent to the total base number contributed by the calcium detergent ranges from about 99.5-20 to about 0.5-80; (B) from about 1 to about 10 % by weight of a succinimide dispersant; and (C) from about 0.1 to about 5 % by weight of a metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate of the formula (I) wherein R1 and R2 are each, independently, hydrocarbyl groups containing from 3 to 13 carbon atoms, M is a metal and n is an integer equal to the valence of M. Also disclosed a re methods for cleaning the combustion chamber of internal combustion engines, a method for reducing fuel consumption of internal combustion engines and a method for reducing NOx emissions of internal combustion engines.

This invention relates to mineral oil based gear oils and transmission fluids which comprise a major amount of a mineral oil having an iodine number of less than 9 and where at least 55% of the saturates are aliphatic, and gear oil or transmission fluid additives. In one embodiment, the invention relates to a gear oil or transmission fluid composition comprising a major amount of lubricant basestock and at least one functional additive wherein a major amount of the lubricant basestock comprises a mineral oil having an iodine number of less than 9 and comprising at least 45% by weight of aliphatic saturates. These gear oils and transmission fluids have good viscosity and oxidation properties.

The invention relates to lubricant compositions which contain (1) specific organometallic compounds, or (2) a specific organometallic compound and an ashless sulfur compound, or (3) an organomolybdenum compound and an ashless sulfur compound having a specific group, or (4) a specific organometallic compound and a phosphorus compound, or (5) an organonickel compound, or (6) a specific organometallic compound. The lubricant compositions of the invention not only can impart far higher load bearing properties and extreme-pressure properties than conventional ones to members to which the compositions are applied, but also show an excellent lubricating performance at high temperatures.

This invention relates to antioxidant compositions comprising (A) at least one secondary diarylamine, (B) at least one sulfurized olefin and/or sulfurized hindered phenol, and (C) at least one oil soluble molybdenum compound. These antioxidant compositions are highly effective at providing oxidative stability to lubricating compositions, especially for highly saturated, low sulfur lubrication base oils.

Lubricating oils are described which are useful in two-cycle engines. These oils contain a minor amount of at least one phenolic compound of the general formula(R).sub.a --Ar--(OH).sub.bwherein R is a substantially saturated, hydrocarbon-based group of an average of at least 10 aliphatic carbon atoms; a and b are each independently an integer of one up to three times the number of aromatic nuclei present in Ar with the proviso that the sum of a and b does not exceed the unsatisfied valences of Ar; and Ar is a single ring, a fused ring or a linked polynuclear moiety having 0 to 3 optional substituents consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, methylol or lower hydrocarbon-based substituted methylol, halo and combinations of two or more of said optional substituents.
