A coupler is described for use in carbon black filled rubber compositions. The coupler includes an amine group and a thiol group or a polysulfidic linkage. The coupler improves the interaction of the carbon black with the rubber as measured by a decrease in the tan delta at 60° C. while substantially maintaining the tan delta at 0° C.

Lubricating oils are described which are useful in two-cycle engines. These oils contain a minor amount of at least one phenolic compound of the general formula(R).sub.a --Ar--(OH).sub.bwherein R is a substantially saturated, hydrocarbon-based group of an average of at least 10 aliphatic carbon atoms; a and b are each independently an integer of one up to three times the number of aromatic nuclei present in Ar with the proviso that the sum of a and b does not exceed the unsatisfied valences of Ar; and Ar is a single ring, a fused ring or a linked polynuclear moiety having 0 to 3 optional substituents consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, methylol or lower hydrocarbon-based substituted methylol, halo and combinations of two or more of said optional substituents.

This invention relates to a composition comprising the combination of(A) at least one alkyl phenol of the formula(R).sub.a --AR--(OH).sub.b (I)wherein each R is independently a substantially saturated hydrocarbon-based group of an average of at least about 10 aliphatic carbon atoms; a, and b are each independently an integer of one up to three times the number of aromatic nuclei present in Ar with the proviso that the sum of a, b and c does not exceed the unsatisfied valences of Ar; and Ar is an aromatic moiety which is a single ring, a fused ring or a linked polynuclear ring having 0 to 3 optional substituents selected from the group consisting essentially of lower alkyl, lower alkoxyl, carboalkoxy methylol or lower hydrocarbon-based substituted methylol, nitro, nitroso, halo and combinations of said optional substituents, and(B) at least one amino compound with the proviso that the amino compound is not an amino phenol.Lubricants and lubricating oil-fuel mixtures for two-cycle engines which include the above compositions, and methods for lubricating two-cycle engines are also within the scope of this invention.

Sulfur-containing, oil-soluble compositions are described which are useful as lubricating oil additives, particularly in lubricants containing little or no phosphorus. In one embodiment, the compositions of the invention comprise (A) at least one metal salt of at least one dithiocarbamic acid of the formulaR.sub.1 (R.sub.2)N--CSSH (I)wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently hydrocarbyl groups in which the total number of carbon atoms in R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is sufficient to render the metal salt oil-soluble, and (B) at least one oil-soluble sulfurized Diels-Alder adduct. Lubricating oil compositions containing the compositions of the invention exhibit improved oxidation-corrosion-inhibiting properties, anti-wear properties, and/or extreme pressure properties. Such lubricating compositions containing less than about 0.1% by weight of phosphorus also exhibit good compatability with nitrile seals.

Lubricating oils containing at least one amino phenol of the general formula ##STR1## wherein R is a substantially saturated, hydrocarbon-based group of at least about 10 aliphatic carbon atoms, a, b and c are, for example, each 1, 2 or 3, and Ar is an aromatic moiety such as a benzene nucleus, naphthalene nucleus or linked benzene nuclei, are effective in lubricating two-cycle internal combustion engines. Typically such amino phenols for this use are formed by nitration and reduction of alkyl phenols having an alkyl or alkenyl group of at least about 50 carbon atoms.

Nitro phenols of the general formula ##STR1## wherein R is an aliphatic substituent of at least about 40 carbon atoms, a, b and c are, for example, each 1, 2 or 3, and Ar is an aromatic moiety such as a benzene nucleus, naphthalene nucleus or linked benzene nuclei, are useful additives for fuels and lubricants and intermediates to such additives. These nitro phenols can be conveniently prepared by nitrating appropriate phenols. Typically nitro phenols are formed by nitration of alkyl phenols having an alkyl group of at least about 50 carbon atoms.

Compositions which form homogeneous blends with lubricating oils and the like are produced by preparing a mixture of an oil-soluble dispersant (preferably a substantially neutral or acidic carboxylic dispersant) and a dimercaptothiadiazole, preferably 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole, usually with a diluent, especially a lubricant base liquid, and heating said mixture above about 100.degree. C. The compositions often contain dimercaptothiadiazole moieties in amounts substantially greater than stoichiometric. They are useful for suppression of copper activity and "lead paint" deposition in lubricants.
