Abstract: A method of controlling a valve actuation system is provided. An intake cam assembly is operated to move an intake valve between a first position and a second position. An exhaust cam assembly is operated to move an exhaust valve between a first position a second position. An engine brake is operated to selectively move the exhaust valve from the first position towards the second position when a piston is at or near a top-dead-center position of a compression stroke. At least one operating parameter of the engine is sensed. A desired intake valve actuation period is determined based on the at least one operating parameter. A valve actuator is engaged with the intake valve to prevent the intake valve from returning to the first position in response to operation of the intake cam assembly. The valve actuator is released to allow the intake valve to return to the first position at the end of the determined valve actuation period.

Abstract: A variable ratio rocker arm is provided for use in combination with the valve stem and push rod of an internal combustion engine. The rocker arm has a toothed rack. A fulcrum rod is provided with a toothed sector. A stationary support member has a rod seat. The fulcrum rod toothed sector engages the toothed rack of the rocker arm and the rod seat of the stationary support shaft. An operating arm is coupled to the fulcrum rod for simultaneously rotating and translating the fulcrum rod along the toothed rack of the rocker arm and the rod seat of the stationary support shaft. The operating arm causes the fulcrum rod to rotate and translate along the mating toothing from one point of pivotal engagement, corresponding to a first engine operating condition, to another point of pivotal engagement, corresponding to a second engine operating condition.

Abstract: A method for automatically setting valve clearances in internal combustion engines (also known as nulltappet settingnull or nullvalve lash settingnull) comprises a series of steps in which a rocker arm is set to a zero position that is recorded as a reference datum and an adjustment screw is then operated to set the rocker arm to a first reference position. The adjustment screw is then rotated through a predetermined angle so that the rocker arm is moved to a second reference position. The difference between the first and second reference positions and the predetermined angle are used to determine a coefficient relating the angular movement of the adjustment screw to linear movement of the rocker arm. The coefficient is then used to calculate the angular rotation of the adjustment screw required to set a predetermined valve clearance relative to the zero position. The initial adjustment of the rocker arm position serves to neutralize backlash in the valve drive train prior to setting the valve clearance. The method and associated apparatus may also be used to set the clearance between a rocker arm and other rocker arm actuated engine components.

Abstract: A crankshaft driven positive displacement gear type air compressor enclosed within the engine housing forces air in between the compressor and reciprocating means. At approximately top dead center fuel is injected into the engine and burns. The high pressures of combustion transfer energy to the gears of the compressor and the reciprocating means and crankshaft assembly forcing them to accelerate. The reciprocating means accelerates to the bottom dead center position completely uncovering two exhaust ports. Exhaust passes through the exhaust ports and is scavenged with compressed air from the compressor flowing into the housing space enclosing the reciprocating means. The reciprocating means returns to the top dead center position compressing air in the housing space between the compressor and the reciprocating means. At approximately top dead center the process repeats itself.

Abstract: A retainer retains a release member for engine valves of an internal combustion engine. The release member causes an engine valve to be actuated depending on various operating conditions of the engine, such as engine speed or oil level. The retainer retains the release member to at least one of a cam lobe and a cam gear. The release member may be substantially L-shaped and centrifugally responsive. Alternatively, the release member may be a substantially U-shaped yoke that at least partially surrounds a cam shaft. The retainer includes a pin that is substantially transverse and non-intersecting to the cam shaft. The pin may be substantially straight and interconnect to bosses that project from the cam gear. Alternatively, the pin may be substantially C-shaped and extend into apertures in the cam gear that extend in the axial direction of the cam gear.
