A multi-layered module-type software layout known from the related art has been further developed for vehicles, and in addition, definite procedures are given for putting it into practical use. According to the present invention, to do this, a computer system is described having a software architecture (FIG. 4) that includes practical function assignments and interfaces having exchangeable modular plug-ins. With the aid of a prioritization method according to the present invention, these plug-ins may be polled independently of the number and functioning of the requesting systems for flexibilization. A method according to the present invention for powertrain control of a motor vehicle is divided into 5 phases from the characterization of environmental influences to the approach to the optimal operating point. In a computer system according to the present invention, having an object-oriented software system, this method may also be applied.

An output from the sensor is applied to a sample and hold circuit which is adapted to provide a time displaced output to a hierarchical group of neural elements. The neural elements operate upon said time displaced signals by varying the weighting of the signals and/or threshold values of the neural elements in accordance with a desired output parameter. The output of the neural computer is applied to a control circuit which is adapted to control an automobile actuator. The hierarchical group of neural elements are provided with numerous forms of different learning functions so that the desired output parameter is achieved. In one such embodiment desired parameters are applied to said neural computer and to a comparator, signals derived from sensors associated with automobile actuators are also applied to said comparator whereby difference signals are outputted from said comparator to control the weighting and/or threshold levels of the neural elements. The invention may be applied to different functions such as controlling air/fuel ratio, ignition timing, knock control, sensing, suspension adjustment, and road surface detection.

The discontinuous curvature path is collision-free within a tolerance envelope centered on the discontinuous curvature path. The system further includes a path transformer to locate and replace at least one treatable primitive in the discontinuous curvature path with a corresponding continuous curvature segment to form a modified path remaining within the tolerance envelope. Each treatable primitive is a predetermined pattern of elementary paths. The system further includes a controller to control the motion of the vehicle according to the modified path.

In order to do so, the vehicle's computer may conduct a series of environmental, system, and driver checks to identify certain conditions. The computer may correct some of these conditions and also provide a driver with a checklist of tasks for completion. Once the tasks have been completed and the conditions are changed, the computer may allow the driver to switch from the manual to the autonomous driving mode. The computer may also make a determination, under certain conditions, that it would be detrimental to the driver's safety or comfort to make a switch from the autonomous driving mode to the manual driving mode.
