Abstract: A radio communication network includes at least one mobile transceiver unit in communication with at least one base transceiver unit that facilitates communicate with at least one host computer for storage and manipulation of data collected by bar code scanners or other data collectors associated with the mobile transceiver units. The radio network implemented by the mobile transceivers and base transceivers adapts to compensate for the wide range of operating conditions by adjusting its operating parameters. Such operating parameters include: the length and frequency of spreading codes employed in direct-sequence spread spectrum communications; hop frame lengths, coding and interleaving in frequency-hopping spread spectrum communications; the method of source encoding used; and the data packet size in a data segmentation communication scheme. The base transceiver is responsive to information contained within transmissions received from the mobile transceiver units in establishing data packet sizes as well as to the transmissions themselves. The base transceiver is also responsive to the quality of transmissions received from the mobile transceiver units in determining whether to modify current data packet sizes.

Abstract: A receiver and a method for controlling a receiver, the receiver being implemented on the RAKE principle and comprising a number of correlators (30a-30d) which are able to synchronize with a received signal. To effectively utilize the correlators of the receiver, the operation made of the correlators in the receiver is changed dynamically in the method of the invention between the received signal tracking and acquisition modes according to the need.

Abstract: Improved apparatus for a radio communication network having a multiplicity of mobile transceiver units selectively in communication with a plurality of base transceiver units which communicate with one or two host computers for storage and manipulation of data collected by bar code scanners or other collection means associated with the mobile transceiver units. The radio network is adaptive in that in order to compensate for the wide range of operating conditions a set of variable network parameters are exchanged between transceivers in the network. These parameters define optimized communication on the network under current network conditions. Examples of such parameters include: the length and frequency of the spreading code in direct-sequence spread spectrum communications; the hop frame length, coding, and interleaving in frequency-hopping spread spectrum communications; the method of source encoding used; and the data packet size in a network using data segmentation. The invention is preferably to be applicable as an upgrade of an existing data capture system wherein a large number of hand-held transceiver units operate over an extensive area to gather data in various places, requiring the use of multiple base stations. In a variety of such installations such as warehouse facilities, distribution centers, and retail establishments, it may be advantageous to utilize not only multiple bases capable of communication with a single host, but with multiple hosts as well.

Abstract: In a WCDMA mobile communication system, when the amount of packet traffic transmitted to or received from a UE decreases during a predetermined time in a CELL_DCH state in which a WCDMA packet data connection has been established, the UE transitions to a CELL_FACH state by a radio network controller (RNC). Thereafter, it is determined if there is no transmitted or received packet traffic during a certain time in the CELL_FACH state (which is an RRC state in which an RRC connection has been connected, and the dedicated physical channel has been released). When it is determined that there is no transmitted or received packet traffic during the certain time, the UE requests a network to release the RRC connection by utilizing a Signaling Connection Release Indication (SCRI) message. The invention enables a UE to check a packet transmission or reception flow, and to directly transmit the SCRI message to the network.
