Abstract: A vehicle operates a system and method of predicting a thermal runaway event in a battery pack of the vehicle. The battery pack includes a battery cell. The sensor obtains measurements of a parameter of the battery cell at a plurality of times. The processor is configured to determine a value of at least one feature of the battery cell from the measurements of the parameter, determine a likelihood of the thermal runaway event from the value of the at least one feature, and take an action to prevent the thermal runaway event from occurring based on the likelihood.

Abstract: A method for controlling continuous and discrete actuators (e.g., modes) in a powertrain system includes receiving preview information from a sensor(s) describing an upcoming dynamic state at a future time point, and providing control inputs for the actuators to a controller that includes the preview information. The input set collectively describes a future torque or speed output state at the future time point. The controller processes the input set via a dynamical predictive model, in real time, to determine control solutions to take at the present time point for implementing the dynamic state at the future time point. A lowest opportunity cost control solution is determined and optimized. The controller executes the optimized solution at the present time step.

Abstract: A vehicle propulsion system includes a combustion engine configured to output a propulsion torque to satisfy a propulsion demand, and a traction electric machine to generate a supplemental torque to selectively supplement the propulsion torque. The propulsion system also includes a controller programmed to forecast an acceleration demand based on at least one estimation model. The controller is also programmed to issue a command indicative of a required axle torque corresponding to the acceleration demand. The controller is further programmed to engage at least one fuel conservation action in response to the required axle torque being within a first predetermined torque threshold range.

Abstract: A direct-injection internal combustion engine is described and includes a pressure sensor that is disposed to monitor in-cylinder combustion pressure. A method, executed as a control routine in an attached controller, includes monitoring engine speed, engine load, temperature and combustion pressure. Combustion variation parameters are determined based upon the combustion pressure. A desired state for a combustion parameter can be determined based upon the engine speed, the engine load, and the temperature, and an adjustment to the desired state for the combustion parameter can be determined based upon the combustion variation parameters, wherein the adjustment to the desired state is selected to achieve acceptable states for the combustion variation parameters. Operation of the internal combustion engine is controlled based upon the desired state for the combustion parameter and the adjustment to the desired state for the combustion parameter.

Abstract: An engine assembly includes an engine with an engine block having at least one cylinder. A crankshaft is moveable to define a plurality of crank angles from a bore axis defined by the cylinder to a crank axis defined by the crankshaft. The plurality of angles includes a crank angle (CA50) corresponding to 50% of the fuel received by the cylinder being combusted. A controller is operatively connected to the engine and has a processor and a tangible, non-transitory memory on which is recorded instructions for executing a method for controlling the combustion phasing in the engine during a transient state. The controller is programmed to generate a learned table by storing at least one combustion phasing parameter in the tangible, non-transitory memory. Combustion phasing during a transient state is controlled based at least partially on the learned table.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine is described. Controlling the internal combustion engine includes gathering engine operating data during steady-state engine operation, including gathering a first dataset associated with a cylinder air charge during steady-state operation of the engine in the PVO state and gathering a second dataset associated with a cylinder air charge during steady-state operation of the engine in the NVO state. An optimization routine is executed to determine a first subset of parameters associated with a first relationship for a cylinder air charge model based upon the second dataset. The optimization routine is also executed to determine a second subset of parameters associated with a second relationship for the cylinder air charge model based upon the first dataset. A cylinder air charge is determined in real-time during engine operation based upon the cylinder air charge model and the first and second subsets of parameters.

Each battery pack mount includes a base plate and a top plate and an actuator configured to alter a distance between plates. A monitoring unit is configured to monitor a value representative of a battery pack pressure, determine whether the value falls within a pressure threshold window, and maintain the value within the pressure threshold window by actively altering the battery pack pressure.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure include the detection of battery cell degradation. An exemplary battery management system can include a memory, computer readable instructions, and one or more processors that perform operations that include: responsive to determining that a charging state has completed, measuring a first cell voltage of a cell of the battery pack; responsive to the first cell voltage exceeding a reference voltage, measuring a second cell voltage of the cell of the battery pack; responsive to the second cell voltage being equal to the reference voltage, measuring a cell pressure of the cell of the battery pack at the reference voltage; determining a difference between the cell pressure and a prior cell pressure at the reference voltage; and responsive to the difference between the cell pressure and the prior cell pressure exceeding a threshold, identifying the cell of the battery pack as a degraded cell.
