Thermally stable, solid alumina-based compositions useful for the trapping of nitrogen oxides that are contained in gaseous fluids, notably in vehicular exhaust gases, are formed of alumina, cerium and a divalent metal M selected from among barium, strontium or an association of these two elements and which include at least 10% of the weight of element M expressed by weight of oxide in contrast to the total weight of the composition and also wherein the aluminate compound of the metal element M, i.e., MAl2O4, is absent and not detectable by X-ray diffraction of the composition, after calcination thereof with air at 700° C. for two hours.

An exhaust aftertreatment system that includes a suitable combination of particulate catalyst materials is used to effectively reduce an amount of NOX to N2 and water in a high-oxygen content exhaust flow from an engine that is controlled to operate by cyclically burning lean and rich mixtures of air and fuel. The catalyst materials of the exhaust aftertreatment system comprise (1) lanthanum-based perovskite oxide particles to oxidize NO to NO2, (2) barium oxide particles to temporarily store NO2, (3) copper oxide nanoparticles chemically deposited onto particles of cerium oxides to reduce NOX to N2 and to generate NH3, and (4) particles of a selective reduction catalyst to temporarily store NH3 and to reduce any residual NOX to N2 and water before the exhaust flow from the engine is discharged to the atmosphere.

On a substrate (45) of the exhaust treatment catalyst (13), a coat layer comprised of at least two layers of a top coat layer (46) and a bottom coat layer (47) is formed. The top coat layer (46) is comprised of an exhaust purification catalyst for reacting NOx contained in exhaust gas and reformed hydrocarbons, while the bottom coat layer (47) is comprised of an NOx absorption catalyst. The concentration of hydrocarbons which flows into the exhaust treatment catalyst (13) is made to vibrate within a predetermined range of amplitude and within a predetermined range of period. Due to this, NOx contained in exhaust gas and NOx desorbed from the NOx absorption catalyst (47) are reduced in the exhaust purification catalyst (46).
