A method of making a polymer with stable Mooney viscosity is described. A conjugated diolefin is reacted in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an initiator to form a polymer. After forming the polymer, alkoxysilane terminal functionalizing groups are bonded to the polymer. An alkoxysilane stabilizing agent is then added to the polymer in the presence of hydrocarbon oil. The polymer is then desolvatized, resulting in a polymer with stable Mooney viscosity, even over prolonged periods of time. Compositions and articles containing the polymer are also described.

Provided is a rubber composition having an intramolecular double bond capable of sulfur cross-linking, comprising at least one of 1 to 100 parts by mass of carbon black and 10 to 150 parts by mass of an inorganic filler other than carbon black, 0.1 to 50 parts by mass of a sulfur-containing compounding agent and 0.1 to 30 parts by mass of a hydrocarbon compound with both terminal groups thioesterified, per 100 parts by mass of the rubber having an intramolecular double bond capable of sulfur cross-linking. This rubber composition can provide a vulcanized substance having excellent toughness, for example, as a part of at least one of a cap tread, a side wall, a belt, an inner liner, a carcass and a bead of a pneumatic tire without substantially reducing processability of an unvulcanized substance and vulcanizate physical properties of the vulcanized substance.

The invention relates to a tire with circumferentially zoned tread including peripheral sidewall extensions. The tread zones are comprised of three circumferential load bearing zones, with each zone containing a portion of the running surface of the tread, comprised of an intermedial rubber zone positioned between and extending beneath two stratified lateral tread rubber zones and, in addition, peripheral sidewall extensions. The tread configuration contains a carbon black reinforced tread base rubber layer underlying the intermedial tread rubber zone. The lateral tread rubber zones are therefore spaced apart from each other with the intermedial tread zone therebetween and also at least partially spaced apart from the tread base rubber layer with the intermedial tread zone therebetween. The tread includes a peripheral carbon black reinforced rubber layer as an extension of the tire sidewall which extends radially outward from the outer tire sidewall to thereby join a portion of a lateral tread zone which may extend to and include a portion of the running surface of the tread.
