    Abstract: Described herein are methods of coating both metallic and polymeric surfaces adding hydrophilicity comprising the steps mixing a coating composition comprising at least one polyol, at least one compound having at least two isocyanate groups, and an organic solvent; introducing nucleophilic functional groups on the surface thereby creating an active surface; subjecting the active surface to the coating composition thereby forming a coated surface; and curing the coated surface. Medical devices, for example, implantable medical devices can be coated by the methods described herein.

    Abstract: Disclosed are polymer compositions, comprising: (a) a poly(phenylene ether); (b) a hydrogenated block copolymer of an alkenyl aromatic compound and a conjugated diene; (c) a polybutene; (d) a flame retardant; (e) an anti-UV agent wherein the agent comprises a trisaryl-1,3,5-triazine; (f) a copolymer of ethylene and a C3-C12 alpha-olefin; and (g) a polyolefin homopolymer; wherein the polymer composition does not contain a benzotriazole-type UV absorber; all weight percents are based on the total weight of the composition; and wherein an article made from the composition: (i) is substantially stainless; (ii) exhibits a CIELAB color shift, (ΔE) of 3 or less after 168 hours of heat exposure at 75° C.; and (iii) exhibits a CIELAB color shift, (ΔE) of 12 or less after 300 hours of xenon arc exposure according to ASTM D 4459. Also disclosed are processes for making the compositions as well as articles derived therefrom.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a mold-releasing agent comprising, as active ingredients, a graft copolymer (A) in which a polyalkylene glycol or an alkyl ether thereof is graft-copolymerized with a polyfluoro-1-alkene represented by the general formula: CnF2n+1(CH2CF2)a(CF2CF2)bCH═CH2 (wherein n is an integer of 1 to 6, a is an integer of 1 to 4, and b is an integer of 1 to 3), and a polyfluoroalkylphosphonic acid represented by the general formula: CnF2n+1(CH2CF2)a(CF2CF2)b(CH2CH2)cP(O)(OH)2 (wherein n is an integer of 1 to 6, a is an integer of 1 to 4, and b is an integer of 1 to 3, and c is an integer of 1 to 3) or a salt thereof (B). The mold-releasing agent comprises, as an active ingredient, a compound having a perfluoroalkyl group containing 6 or less carbon atoms, which is said to have low bioaccumulation potential, and having mold release performance equivalent to or more than that of a mold-releasing agent comprising a compound having a perfluoroalkyl group containing 8 or more carbon atoms as an active ingredient.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to coating compositions (pastes) containinga) about 20 to 90% of an aqueous polyurethane dispersion which has a solids content of about 20 to 60% and wherein the polyurethane is rendered hydrophilic by carboxylate groups, sulphonate groups, pendant polyether chains having oxyethylene units, terminal polyether chains having oxyethylene units or mixtures thereof,b) about 0.1 to 5% by weight of a water-soluble, polymeric thickening agent for aqueous polyurethane dispersions which is not a polyurethane and which is free from carboxyl groups,c) about 3 to 80% by weight of water-immiscible organic solvent which is not a solvent for polyurethanes dispersed in water and which has a boiling point up to 250 C.,d) about 0.1 to 5% by weight of a cross-linking agent for the polyurethane dispersed in water which does not contain free isocyanate groups ande) about 0.1 to 5% by weight of a hydrophilic polyisocyanate which promotes the adhesion of the coating composition to substrates and is a cross-linking agent for the polyurethane dispersed in water,the sum of the percentages of a)+b)+c)+d)+e) being 100.The present invention is also directed to the use of these coating compositions for coating of substrates, preferably made of textile or leather, by the direct or transfer process, using the evaporation coagulation technique.
