Abstract: An improved vortex-type mixing device for a down-flow hydroprocessing reactor is described. The device provides improved overall mixing efficiency of an existing mixing volume in the mixing of gas and liquid phases in two-phase systems while reducing the pressure drop through the device, as compared with prior art devices. Typical hydroprocessing applications include hydrotreating, hydrofinishing, hydrocracking and hydrodewaxing.

Abstract: The present invention provides a process for upgrading a heavy hydrocarbon mixture, said process comprising: i) dividing said heavy hydrocarbon mixture into at least a first portion and a second portion, wherein said first portion comprises 10-45% wt of the heavy hydrocarbon mixture and said second portion comprises 90-55% wt of the heavy hydrocarbon mixture; ii) thermally upgrading said first portion of heavy hydrocarbon mixture in an upgrader to produce a lighter hydrocarbon mixture; and iii) mixing said lighter hydrocarbon mixture with a heavy hydrocarbon mixture to produce an upgraded hydrocarbon mixture, wherein, on entry to said upgrader, the composition of said first portion of heavy hydrocarbon mixture is identical to that of said second portion of heavy hydrocarbon mixture.

Abstract: The invention concerns a process and a facility for reducing the concentration of heavy polycyclic aromatic compounds (HPNA) in the recycle loop of hydrocracking units, which comprises a fractionation column.In accordance with this process, a stream is withdrawn from the fractionation column at the level of at least one plate located between the supply plate and the plate for withdrawing the heaviest distillate fraction; the stream is stripped in an external stripping step by a stripping gas, in the presence of a portion of the residue. The separated gaseous effluent is recycled to the column, advantageously as a stripping gas, and the liquid fraction is recycled to the hydrocracking step; a residue is purged in the stripping step.

Abstract: A process is provided to partially upgrade heavy oil using two or more reaction zones connected in series, each reaction zone being a continuous stirred tank maintained at hydrocracking conditions. The heavy oil feedstock and a solid particulate catalyst are stirred to form pumpable slurry which is heated to a target hydrocracking temperature and then continuously fed to the first reaction zone. Hydrogen is continuously introduced to the reaction zone to achieve hydrocracking and to produce a volatile vapour stream carried upwardly by the hydrogen to produce an overhead vapour stream. The hydrocracked heavy oil slurry from one reaction zone is fed to a next reaction zone also maintained under hydrocracking conditions with a continuous hydrogen feed to produce a volatile vapour stream. The overhead vapour stream from each reactor zone is continuously removed, and the hydrocracked heavy oil slurry from the last of the reaction zones is removed.

Abstract: This invention relates to the conversion or hydrotreatment of petroleum or coal derived liquids in a novel ebullated-bed reactor system. The novel processing scheme results in a much simpler and less costly (investment and annual operating) ebullated-bed reaction system through the elimination of the high pressure, high temperature separator, hydrogen purification plant, and recycle gas compressor as well as a smaller hydrogen make-up compressor all resulting in substantial operational and construction efficiency.

Abstract: A process for upgrading residuum hydrocarbons including: feeding pitch, hydrogen, and a partially spent catalyst recovered from a hydrocracking reactor to an ebullated bed pitch hydrocracking reactor; contacting the pitch, hydrogen, and the catalyst in the ebullated bed pitch hydrocracking reactor at reaction conditions of temperature and pressure sufficient to convert at least a portion of the pitch to distillate hydrocarbons; and separating the distillate hydrocarbons from the catalyst. In some embodiments, the process may include selecting the ebullated bed pitch hydrocracking reactor reaction conditions to be at or below the level where sediment formation would otherwise become excessive and prevent continuity of operations.
