摘要: A micromachined device for efficient thermal processing at least one fluid stream includes at least one fluid conducting tube having at least a region with wall thickness of less than 50 μm. The device optionally includes one or more thermally conductive structures in thermal communication with first and second thermally insulating portions of the fluid conducting tube. The device also may include a thermally conductive region, and at least a portion of the fluid conducting tube is disposed within the region. A plurality of structures may be provided projecting from a wall of the fluid conducting tube into an inner volume of the tube. The structures enhance thermal conduction between a fluid within the tube and a wall of the tube. A method for fabricating, from a substrate, a micromachined device for processing a fluid stream allows the selective removal of portions of the substrate to provide desired structures integrated within the device. As an example, the micromachined device may be adapted to efficiently react fluid reactants to produce fuel for a fuel cell associated with the device, resulting in a system capable of conversion of chemical to electrical energy.

摘要: A microfabricated chemical reactor includes a plurality of lamina, an inlet port formed in at least one of the lamina, and an outlet port formed in at least one of the lamina. A continuous channel is formed in at least one of the lamina and provides fluid communication between the inlet port and the outlet port. In one configuration of the microfabricated chemical reactor, the reactor includes a particle filter disposed in the continuous channel and formed by one of the lamina, wherein the particle filter restricts flow through the continuous channel and retains catalyst or other particles within the continuous channel.

摘要: An electronic device comprising a population of quantum dots embedded in a host matrix and a primary light source which causes the dots to emit secondary light of a selected color, and a method of making such a device. The size distribution of the quantum dots is chosen to allow light of a particular color to be emitted therefrom. The light emitted from the device may be of either a pure (monochromatic) color, or a mixed (polychromatic) color, and may consist solely of light emitted from the dots themselves, or of a mixture of light emitted from the dots and light emitted from the primary source. The dots desirably are composed of an undoped semiconductor such as CdSe, and may optionally be overcoated to increase photoluminescence.

摘要: A novel encoding system and methods for determining the location and/or identity of a particular item or component of interest is provided. In particular, the present invention utilizes a “barcode” comprising one or more sizes of semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots) having characteristic spectral emissions, to either “track” the location of a particular item of interest or to identify a particular item of interest. The semiconductor nanocrystals used in the inventive “barcoding” scheme can be tuned to a desired wavelength to produce a characteristic spectral emission in narrow spectral widths, and with a symmetric, nearly Gaussian line shape, by changing the composition and size of the quantum dot. Additionally, the intensity of the emission at a particular characteristic wavelength can also be varied, thus enabling the use of binary or higher order encoding schemes. The information encoded by the quantum dot can be spectroscopically decoded, thus providing the location and/or identity of the particular item or component of interest. In particular, a single primary light source can be used to decode the inventive barcode. In particularly preferred embodiments, the present system and method is used in applications to security systems, to the tracking of consumer items such as jewelry, vehicles, or paper. In other particularly preferred embodiments, the present system and method is used in applications for biochemistry to track the location of biomolecules such as DNA sequences, combinatorial chemistry, and genomics for encoding and probe identifiers.

摘要: A system for selective chemical vapor deposition of polymers onto a substrate. A substrate is provided which comprises a plurality of surface regions, wherein the surface of at least one region provides a more favorable nucleation site for at least one of a polymer or polymer precursor than at least one other region. This may be an intrinsic characteristic of the substrate or may be accomplished through surface treatment of a substrate. The substrate is subjected to chemical vapor deposition of a reactive monomer, producing a polymer coating which is substantially thicker in the regions of favorable nucleation than in the regions of unfavorable nucleation.

摘要: The current subject matter includes methods, systems, articles, and techniques to deliver material to anucleate cells, such as red blood cells. Using a rapid deformation based microfluidic system, loading of red blood cells with macromolecules of different sizes has been shown. Although delivery to some mammalian cells, such as cancer cell lines and fibroblasts had been previously demonstrated using this technique, those designs were incompatible with RBCs that have dramatically different physical properties. Through the use of smaller constriction sizes, high speeds and different buffers successful delivery to red blood cells can be achieved. By enabling robust delivery to red blood cells in a simple, scalable manner, the current subject matter can be implemented in a diversity of applications that deliver material to study red blood cell diseases and/or use red blood cells as a therapeutic platform. Related apparatus, systems, techniques, and articles are also described.
