The invention pertains to oil soluble copolymers derived from ethylene and 1-butene which have a number average molecular weight between about 1,500 and 7,500, at least about 30 percent of all polymer chains terminated with ethylvinylidene groups, and ethylene-derived content of not greater than about 50 weight percent, and which form solutions in mineral oil free of polymer aggregates, as determined by light scattering measurements. Lubricating oil additives, particularly dispersants, produced by the functionalization and derivatization of these copolymers have enhanced performance (e.g., improved dispersancy and pour point) in lubricating oil compositions, attributable in part to the combination of properties characterizing the copolymers.

Liquid hydrocarbon lubricant viscosity index improver compositions are disclosed having high shear stability. The compositions comprise the homopolymer or copolymer product of the oligomerization of C.sub.3 to C.sub.5 alpha-olefin or mixtures thereof, with or without ethylene as co-monomer. The process is carried out under oligomerization conditions in contact with a reduced valence state Group VIB metal catalyst on porous support. The viscosity index improver of the invention has a regio-irregularity of at least 20%, weight average molecular weight between 6,000 and 30,000 and molecular weight distribution between 2 and 5.

This invention deals with viscosity improvers which are obtained through the use of a mixed catalyst system comprising a tertiary organo halide and a Lewis acid catalyst. A liquid alpha-olefin polymer composition having a polymodal distribution with peak molecular weight maximum at 2,000 to 5,000 and at 50,000 to 75,000 is useful as a lubricating oil.

An insulating oil which has good resistance to oxidation and which is also non-gassing and of low viscosity comprises from 150 percent (by weight) of a residually unsaturated alkene polymer, and correspondingly from 99-50 percent of a low viscosity hydrocarbon oil. The polymer is derived predominantly from an alkene or alkenes having from three to five carbon atoms and has an average molecular weight in the range 100-900, preferably in the range 250-500. A mixture of such alkene polymers may be used. The hydrocarbon oil is preferably a mineral oil, and has a viscosity of 30 centistokes or less at 20* C.
