There are provided a NOx storage reduction catalyst which is provided in an exhaust passage for an internal combustion engine, and concentration detection means whose detection state can be changed between a first detection state in which a total concentration of sulfur oxide and hydrogen sulfide in exhaust gas that has passed through the NOx catalyst is detected, and a second detection state in which a concentration of the sulfur oxide in the exhaust gas is detected. An operating state of the internal combustion engine is controlled such that the sulfur oxide is released from the NOx catalyst (sulfur poisoning recovery process). The detection state of the concentration detection means is alternately changed between the first detection state and the second detection state after the concentration detection means which is caused to remain in the second detection state detects release of the sulfur oxide from the NOx catalyst during the sulfur poisoning recovery process, whereby the concentration of the sulfur oxide and a concentration of the hydrogen sulfide are obtained.

A muffler comprises a casing and an exhaust pipe penetrating the casing. An exhaust gas chamber 4 is defined between the outer wall surface of the exhaust pipe and the inner wall surface of the casing. In the exhaust pipe positioned in the casing, an enlarged chamber for accommodating a particulate filter is formed. A downstream side portion of the exhaust pipe and the exhaust gas chamber are communicated with each other by a branch pipe. A communicating port is formed on the wall of an upstream side portion of the exhaust pipe positioned in the exhaust gas chamber. Until the pressure difference between the upstream and downstream of the communication control valve reaches a threshold value, the communication control valve is kept closed to close the communicating port and, thus, the exhaust gas flows through the particulate filter. When the pressure difference has reached the threshold value, the communication control valve is opened by the pressure in the upstream side portion to open the communicating port and, thus, a part of the exhaust gas bypasses the particulate filter.

An exhaust purifying method and apparatus of an internal combustion engine are provided with an exhaust switch valve for switching a flow of exhaust gas flowing into an exhaust filter. By switching the exhaust switch valve, the exhaust gas is fed from one side and the other side of the filter, thereby stirring the soot (particulates) in the exhaust gas deposited on the filter having a NOx absorbent and an active-oxygen discharging agent supported thereon. Thus, the soot in the exhaust gas is continuously burned. Moreover, the switching of the exhaust switch valve and the rich spike are inhibited from being conducted simultaneously. In the case where the rich spike is conducted in order to discharge and reduce NOx absorbed in the NOx absorbent, the exhaust gas containing a large amount of HC and CO can be prevented from being discharged into the atmosphere without being purified.
