Abstract: Customized patient-specific instruments configured to be selectively attached at predetermined locations of a patient's bone are disclosed. The customized patient-specific instruments may include a polymeric body including a bone-facing surface having a customized patient-specific negative contour shaped to match and receive a corresponding positive contour of the patient's bone at the predetermined location. The customized patient-specific instruments also include a metallic coating that defines one or more cutting slots. A method of performing an orthopaedic surgical procedure is also disclosed.

Abstract: In accordance with one or more embodiments herein, a system for optimizing a position of an implant having an individually customized implant hat H and at least one implant protrusion P extending from the implant hat H in the direction of an implant axis A in an anatomical joint of a patient is provided. The system comprises a storage media 110 and a processor 120 which is configured to: receive medical image data representing a three dimensional image of the joint from the storage media 110; obtain a three dimensional virtual model of the joint which is based on the received medical image data; identify damage in the joint based on the received medical image data and/or the three dimensional virtual model of the joint; define an implant area that covers at least a major part of the identified damage; position a virtual implant template having an implant hat H corresponding to said implant area in the three dimensional virtual model of the joint; and generate a customized top surface of the implant hat H to correspond to a simulated healthy cartilage surface. The processor is configured to position the virtual implant template by: placing the virtual implant template so that the cross section area of the implant hat H in a direction perpendicular to the implant axis A covers at least a major part of the damage; and optimizing the tilt of the implant axis A, while maintaining the position of the cross section area of the implant hat H in the joint, by minimizing at least one of the maximum penetration depth Dmax into the bone along the circumference of the implant hat H; the total volume of bone and/or cartilage to be removed for implanting the implant; and/or the surface area of the implant penetration into the bone.

Abstract: A method and system for computer assisted orthopedic feedback of at least one surgical object relative a pre-operative plan are disclosed. The pre-operative plan includes a virtual object, which is the virtual representation of the surgical object, and a virtual structure, which is the virtual representation of the patient structure. The method comprises providing the pre-operative plan including planned position and orientation of the virtual object relative to of the virtual structure; obtaining the position of the patient structure based on a surface of the patient structure using a surgical navigation system; obtaining the position of the surgical object using the surgical navigation system; registering the patient structure to the virtual structure and the surgical object to the virtual object; tracking a current position and orientation of the surgical object using the surgical navigation system; and providing feedback of a current position and orientation of the surgical object relative to the planned position and orientation of the virtual object based on the tracked current position and orientation of the surgical object.

Abstract: A tunable implant, system, and method enables a tunable implant to be adjusted within a patient. The tunable implant includes a securing mechanism to secure the implant in the patient, a actuation portion that enables the implant to move and an adjustment portion that permits adjustment of the implant after the implant has been positioned within the patient. The method of adjusting the tunable implant includes analyzing the operation of the implant, determining if any adjustments are necessary and adjusting the implant to improve implant performance. The implant system includes both the tunable implant and a telemetric system that is operable to telemetrically receive data from the tunable implant where the data is used to determine if adjustment of the tunable implant is necessary. The system also includes an instrument assembly that is used for performing spinal surgery where the instrument assembly includes a mounting platform and a jig.

Abstract: A system and method for developing customized apparatus, such as guides, for use in one or more surgical procedures is disclosed. The system and method incorporates a patient's unique anatomical features or morphology, which may be derived from capturing MRI data or CT data, to fabricate at least one custom apparatus or guide. According to a preferred embodiment, the customized apparatus comprises at least one patient-specific surface and or contour, which may be derived from MRI or CT data. Apparatus may be matched in duplicate and oriented around the patient's own anatomy, and may further provide any desired axial alignments or insertional trajectories. In an alternate embodiment, the apparatus may further be aligned and/or matched with at least one other apparatus during the surgical procedure.

Abstract: A method includes acquiring an anatomical image of at least part of a head of a specific patient, the anatomical image capturing at least a selected location in the head. A personalized gripper, which is shaped based on the anatomical image to personally fit an organ of the specific patient at the selected location, and which includes a first position sensor of a position-tracking system, is fitted. The anatomical image is registered with a coordinate system of the position-tracking system, by identifying the selected location in the anatomical image and measuring a first position of the first position sensor using the position-tracking system. A medical device that includes a second position sensor of the position-tracking system, is navigated in the head of the specific patient by displaying a second position of the medical device in the head on the registered anatomical image.

Abstract: A surgical instrument including a customized patient-specific guide block is disclosed. The customized patient-specific guide block includes a first surface, a bone-facing surface, a second surface positioned opposite the first surface and the bone-facing surface, and a guide pin hole extending between the second surface and the bone-facing surface. The first surface has a customized prosthesis-specific negative contour shaped to match a corresponding contour of a prosthetic component, and the customized prosthesis-specific negative contour includes a concave surface shaped to match a convex surface of the corresponding contour of the prosthetic component. A method of performing an orthopedic surgical procedure is also disclosed.
