Fitting that is compatible with standard fittings is described. In one embodiment, the end of one of a matched set of fittings is provided with an elastomeric material. The elastomeric material deforms when the matched fittings are coupled, resulting in a reduced volume. In certain embodiments, a tube is provided through the tube which is attached at a proximal end and extends to the distal end of the elastomeric material. When the fitting are coupled the tube protrudes past the end of the elastomeric material and into the coupled fitting. In certain embodiments the fitting otherwise conforms to International Standard ISO 594.

An apparatus for analyzing the composition of bodily fluid. The apparatus comprises a fluid handling network including a patient end configured to maintain fluid communication with a bodily fluid in a patient; and a pump unit in operative engagement with the fluid handling network. The pump unit has an infusion mode in which the pump unit is operable to deliver infusion fluid to the patient through the patient end, and a sample draw mode in which the pump unit is operable to draw a sample of the bodily fluid from the patient through the patient end. The apparatus further comprises a spectroscopic analyzer positioned to analyze at least a portion of the sample; a processor in communication with or incorporated into the spectroscopic analyzer; and stored program instructions executable by the processor to obtain measurements of two or more properties of the sample. In one implementation, the pump unit comprises a first pump operable in the infusion mode but not in the sample draw mode, and a second pump operable in the sample draw mode but not in the infusion mode.

The method comprises establishing fluid communication between an analyte detection system and a bodily fluid in the patient. A portion of the bodily fluid is drawn from the patient. A first component of the bodily fluid is separated from the drawn portion, while the analyte detection system remains in fluid communication with the patient. The analyte detection system analyzes the first component to measure a concentration of an analyte in an accurate and timely manner.

The fluid transport network and the pump unit are configured to draw a volume of the bodily fluid from the patient, isolate a fraction of the bodily fluid from the volume, and pass the fraction to the sample analysis chamber and then to the waste container.
