The present invention is directed to catalytic compositions and to curable compositions containing them. Catalytic compositions of the present invention consist essentially of: (i) a metal compound; and (ii) a compound different from (i) that catalyzes an addition reaction between an ethylenically unsaturated compound and a thiol, wherein said catalytic composition is essentially free of vanadium compounds. Curable compositions according to the present invention comprise: (a) a polyene, (b) a polythiol, and (c) a catalytic component, which consists of the afore-mentioned catalytic composition.

The present invention is directed to methods of improving burnish resistance of substrates comprising: (1) applying to at least a portion of the substrate a curable film-forming composition comprising: (a) a polymeric binder comprising at least one polymeric resin having reactive functional groups; (b) a curing agent containing functional groups that are reactive with the reactive functional groups of (a); and (c) silica particles that have been functionalized on their surfaces with an amino silane so as to impart the surfaces with primary amino functional groups; and (2) (a) heating the coated substrate to a temperature and for a time sufficient to cure the curable film-forming composition or (b) allowing a time sufficient to cure the curable film-forming composition under ambient conditions. The present invention is further directed to solventborne, curable film-forming compositions comprising the components (a) (b) and (c) above.

Methods of coating a substrate are disclosed. The methods comprise applying shear force to a coating composition either before or during application of the coating composition to the substrate. The coating composition comprises a water-borne or solvent-borne film-forming resin and a catalyst associated with a carrier, wherein at least some of the catalyst can be released from the carrier upon application of the shear force. Also provided are coated articles prepared by the methods.

There is described a method for the production of a functional polyester having functional group X. The method comprises the step of melt blending a composition comprising (i) a high number average molecular weight (Mn) polyester having a Mn of ≥6,000 Da; and (ii) a functional compound comprising functional group Y which may be the same as functional group X or be different to functional group X but be operable to form functional group X in the functional polyester. The composition is melt blended such that the high Mn polyester and the functional compound react to produce the functional polyester. The high Mn polyester has a Mn that is higher than the Mn of the functional compound. The present invention extends to functional polyesters produced by the method; aqueous, solventborne and powder coating compositions containing the functional polyester, and articles coated with the said coating compositions.

Curable film-forming compositions are provided. The compositions comprise (a) a curing agent comprising reactive functional groups; (b) a film-forming compound comprising functional groups reactive with the reactive functional groups in (a); and (c) a catalyst component added to the curable film-forming composition as a dispersion of micelles in a continuous phase. The catalyst component (c) comprises a catalyst compound contained within or encapsulated by a carrier, and the catalyst compound and carrier together form the micelles in the continuous phase. The carrier comprises block copolymers that comprise at least one hydrophobic block derived from hydrophobic monomers and at least one hydrophilic block derived from (1) hydrophilic monomers and/or (2) monomers containing groups that may be rendered hydrophilic after polymerization.
