A composite material which comprises an elastomer or vulcanized rubber and particles of a high-density material, such as tungsten, evenly dispersed therein, wherein the contents of the elastomer or vulcanized rubber and the high-density particles are 35 to 50 vol. % and 50 to 65 vol. %, respectively, based on the whole composite material, and the high-density particles have a particle composition comprising 60 to 80 vol. % coarse particles having a particle diameter of 10 to 100 μm, 10 to 20 vol. % medium particles having a particle diameter of 3 to 6 μm, and 10 to 20 vol. % fine particles having a particle diameter of 1 to 2 μm, the spaces among the coarse particles being filled with the medium particles and fine particles. The composite material is excellent in flexibility and processability and is suitable for use as a radiation-shielding sheet material, weight member, vibration-damping material, balancing member, radiating material, and shot material.

A composite ceramic body which includes three phases consisting of a MgO phase, a YAP (YAlO3) phase and a spinel (MgAl2O4) phase. This composite ceramic body has a plasma resistance greater than that of alumina and approximately equal to that of MgO. Mechanical properties, such as hardness and bending strength, of the composite ceramic body, are approximately equal or superior to those of Al2O3. A raw material cost and a manufacturing cost thereof are lower than those of a rare-earth oxide. Further, electric conductive particles may be added thereto to lower an electrical resistivity. The composite ceramic body is suitably usable as component parts for a semiconductor manufacturing equipment.

A ceramic substrate material for a thin-film magnetic head includes 25 vol % to 70 vol % of WC and the balance consisting essentially of Al2O3. The WC includes at most 0.1 mass % of a metal, at most 0.5 mass % of oxygen and at most 0.5 mass % of nitrogen. And the WC has a mean particle size of 0.6 μm or less.

A PTC planar heater according to the present invention is produced by bonding one or a plurality of PTC ceramic sheets, each having a pair of electrodes formed on the surface thereof, to an insulator. The electrode pairs are electrically connected in parallel by lead wires. An insulating elastic layer covers the electrodes to prevent warpage, electrical leaks, and shorting. A thickness of the PTC ceramic sheets equal to or greater than 0.5 mm prevents warpage. Resistance is adjusted by cutting conductive paths in the electrodes or by connecting predetermined portions of the electrodes. Further, in a PTC planar unit according to the present invention, a PTC thermistor element having a pair of electrodes formed thereon is in direct contact with one side of an insulation substrate, and a insulation substrate is mounted to the other side thereof.
