    摘要: A simple immunoassay method is provided which distinguishes pathogenic from nonpathogenic forms Entamoeba histolytica in biological samples. This assay utilizes monoclonal antibody preparations which are specific for designated epitopes of the 170 kd subunit of the Gal/GalNAc lectin. When pathogenic forms, specifically, are to be detected, at least one antibody which is immunospecific for an epitope unique to the forms of the 170 kd lectin found in pathogenic strains is used in the assay. The invention further includes monoclonal antibodies which are immunospecific for epitopes 1-3 of the 170 kd subunit of the Gal/GalNAc lectin of either pathogenic or nonpathogenic forms and to monoclonal antibodies specifically immunoreactive with epitopes unique to nonpathogenic derived 170 kd subunit, as well as purified forms of the Gal/GalNAc lectin from both pathogenic and nonpathogenic forms.

    摘要: A method of enrichment and isolation of urease producing organisms from a contaminated specimen by first homogenizing the contaminated specimen in water, then introducing the homogenized contaminated specimen into a solution of urea in an acid, wherein some of the organisms are killed by the acidic medium and remaining organisms are protected from acid attack by creating a protective ammonia by breaking down the urea, and plating the remaining organisms onto a medium which contains antibiotics inhibitory to some of the remaining organisms, but not inhibitory to organisms to be isolated.

    摘要: Sample material is sputtered from an orifice in a disc mounted in a hollow cathode. A plasma plume is ejected from the orifice and the material sputtered from the smaple is transported directly into the base of the plasma plume. Collisions with particles in the plasma plume excite the sputtered material. Light emission and absorption from the plume are measured and ions in the plume are measured. A chamber surrounding the plasma plume is maintained at about 1 torr. About 15 cc's per minute of argon are supplied to the hollow cathode at 2 torr. The power supply supplies about 200 volts at about 0.10 amps. Low energy argon ions strick the disc at the end of the cathode tube and sputter atoms off the aperture. Atoms collide with particles in the plasma causing excitation, photon emission and ionization of atoms which are measured by optical and mass spectrometers.

    摘要: A flexible plastic catheter extends from a distal end of a rigid plastic housing. An elastomeric seal at the distal end of the housing tightly fits within the housing and grips in its bore a stylet. The stylet has a sharp distal end and an enlarged proximal end which receives a distal end of a plastic tube within the housing. The stylet is slideable within the elastic seal. In an extended position, the stylet distal end extends beyond a distal end of the catheter and the proximal end abuts the elastomeric seal. In a retracted position, the elastomeric seal grips the catheter near its distal end and the proximal end abuts a constriction in the proximal end of the housing. In that retracted position, the tubing, the stylet and the catheter form a fluid flow path.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for providing permanent epicardial pacing comparable to permanent transvenous pacing in the acutely ill or debilitated patient under local anesthesia and for drainage of pericardial fluid and pericardial biopsy. The apparatus includes a cylindrical member with first and second open end portions, an inner and outer wall portion and a connecting slot between the inner and outer wall portions, a guard member provided at the first end portion of the cylindrical member adjacent to the slot and a maneuvering member connected to the outer wall portion at the second end portion of the cylindrical member. The epicardial pacing method includes the steps of making a keyhole incision below a xyphoid process of a body, introducing a pericardioscope into a retro-sternal space of the body, making a cruciate incision in the pericardial cavity of the heart, screwing myocardial electrodes into a right ventricle of the heart, removing the pericardioscope from the retro-sternal space; attaching electrodes subcutaneously into a pocket in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen, and attaching a pulse generator to the electrodes to thereby provide epicardial pacing. The method of drainage of pericardial fluid and pericardial biopsy includes the steps of making a keyhole incision below a xyphoid process of a body, introducing a pericardioscope into a retro-sternal space of the body and excising a disc of the pericardium so as to allow for drainage of the pericardial fluid, entrance of the pericardioscope into the pericardial cavity, inspection of the epicardial surface of the heart and evaluation of the pericardium itself.
