An effective vaccine for Marek's disease may be prepared using a viral agent which is a Marek's disease virus unable to express a functional meq protein. This viral agent is effective to elicit an immune response in a chicken to very virulent strains of Marek's disease virus without causing a significant degree of pathogenicity in the inoculated bird. Suitable formulations of the vaccine for use in chickens include an effective immunization dosage of this novel viral agent with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or diluent.

An amplifier distortion reduction system obtains a distortion signal from the amplifier output and feeds the distortion signal back to the input side of the amplifier to cancel with the distortion produced at the amplifier output. For example, a signal to be amplified by an amplifier is received on a main signal path. The amplifier produces an amplified output with a non-distortion spectrum and a distortion spectrum. A sample of the amplified output is produced from the main signal path and placed on a feedback path. On the feedback path, the distortion spectrum is obtained from the sample amplified output. The distortion spectrum is phase and/or amplitude adjusted to produce the distortion signal. The distortion signal is placed onto the main signal path at the input side of the amplifier with the signal to be amplified to destructively combine with the distortion produced from the amplifier in amplifying the signal to be amplified.

The preset invention provides a method for immunizing chickens which comprises inoculating into growing egg a composition comprising either cell-free attenuated viruses of Marek's disease type 1 or cells infected with attenuated viruses of Marek's disease type 1 capable of producing cell-free viruses. A vaccine effective against Marek's disease virus (MDV) comprises (a) an MDV attenuated by virtue of being TK- or (b) a host expressing an MDV antigen, namely the respective MDV homologues of the HSV gB, gC, gD or gH glycoproteins (or antigenic parts thereof) or the respective MDV homologues of the HSV-1 immediate early genes IE-68 or IE-175. The host may be a herpes virus of turkeys (HVT), more particularly HVT in which the MDV antigen is inserted in the HVT homologue of the HSV gC gene, the ribonucleotide reductase (large subunit) gene or the thymidine kinase (TK) gene.

A sustainable cell line of a Marek's disease herpesvirus (MDV) infected chicken cell line derived from chick embryo cells which are chicken helper factor (Chf) negative and which have been treated with N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguansidine (MNNG) and then converted with the MDV which is able to infect avians in vivo. The cell line is useful for vaccine production and for determining the characteristics of the MDV under various conditions.
