Abstract: An apparatus includes first and second wheel sections configured to mate in axially opposed relationship to define a rotatable wheel body. The wheel body has a peripheral outer surface extending circumferentially about an axis of rotation and a bearing cavity centered on the axis. Each of the wheel sections has an axial projection and an axial recess configured to receive the projection on the other of the wheel sections. This limits rotation of the wheel sections relative to each other about the axis when the wheel sections are received in the axially opposed relationship.

Abstract: A wheel hub rotary joint assembly with an axis of rotation includes a wheel hub with a wheel flange for connecting a wheel and a sleeve section for receiving a wheel bearing; a constant-velocity rotary joint with an outer joint part, an inner joint part and torque-transmitting elements. The outer joint part has a first spur gearing section with first teeth at its end facing the wheel hub. The sleeve section has a second spur gearing section with second teeth at its end facing the constant-velocity rotary joint. The two spur gearing sections engage with one another for torque transmission. A tensioner for axially tensioning the wheel hub against the outer joint part is axially supported on one side on the wheel hub and on the other side on the outer joint part. At least one of the two spur gearing sections is designed such that, viewed in the radial direction, the first and second teeth initially only come into contact with one another on a small subsurface of the tooth surfaces facing one another during axial tensioning of the arrangement. This subsurface increases in size during further tensioning. The spur gearing sections are designed such that, viewed in the radial direction, the first and second teeth initially come only into contact with one another on the radially inward side during axial tensioning and, as tensioning increases, also come into contact with one another on the radially outward side, for which purpose a substructure of the sleeve section and/or of the outer joint part having the teeth is designed to be more easily deformable in a radially inward region than in a region lying radially further outward.

Abstract: An axle housing assembly including a cup-shaped center housing having flattened portions which are diametrically opposed from each other. Tubular housing members, each having an end face which is circular in cross section, are connected to the flattened portions of the cup-shaped center housing by a friction weld. The tubular housing members include a connecting portion extending axially from the end face, a first frustroconical portion interconnecting an intermediate portion to the connecting portion and a second frustroconical portion extends axially from the intermediate portion. The cross-sectional area of the connecting portion is thicker than the first frustroconical portion which gradually decreases in thickness toward the intermediate portion. The cup-shaped center housing defines a cavity having an opening thereto and includes a flange portion extending inwardly about the periphery of the opening and a cover plate is mounted on the inwardly extending flange portion. A spring seat member having a configuration providing first and second contact areas is welded to the tubular housing member. Additionally, there is disclosed a method of making the above-described axle housing assembly comprising the steps of forming the cup-shaped center housing from a flat plate and forming the flattened portions, forming the tubular housing members, forming openings in the flattened portions and connecting the tubular housing members to the flattened portions so that the tubular members are disposed over the openings.

Abstract: Disclosed are modular mechanical assemblies formed from durable, corrosion resistant components with sufficient strength to maintain efficient operation. The modular mechanical assemblies include a novel torsion axle assembly having a cartridge that houses a torsion bar with a splined tip. A load bearing, relatively incompressible bushing is optionally disposed about the torsion bar. The cartridge is inserted into an axle tube, and an end cap is placed over the cartridge and torsion bar. The end cap is affixed to the axle tube such that the bushing is secured within a bore in the end cap. The torsion bar tip extends through the bushing and end cap and is secured within a torsion arm. A spindle is also secured within the torsion arm. One or more components of the torsion axle assembly are made from a low alloy, medium carbon steel material that provides corrosion resistance and advantageous yield and ultimate strength properties. One or more components of the assembly can also be coated to improve corrosion resistance. Suitable coating techniques include, but are not limited to liquid ferritic nitrocarburizing, gas nitriding, electroless nickel plating, or a diamond like carbon coating process.
