The dispersant is suitable for dispersing a variety of pigments and other particulate matter in either aqueous or organic media.

The disclosure provides self-dispersing pigment having an isoelectric point of at least about 8 comprising an inorganic particle, and in particular a titanium dioxide (TiO2) pigment, treated sequentially by: hydrolyzing an aluminum compound or basic aluminate to deposit a hydrous alumina surface; and adding a dual-functional compound comprising an anchoring group that attaches the dual-functional compound to the pigment surface, and a basic amine group comprising a primary, secondary or tertiary amine. These self-dispersing pigments are useful in making décor paper that may be used in paper laminates.

A method for preparing suspension of inorganic nanoparticles is described herein. The method includes mixing a dispersing medium (102) with a dispersant (104) and a metal oxide powder (106) to form a primary mixture (110), the dispersant (104) being selected based on interaction energy of the dispersant (104) with respect to the dispersing medium (102) and the metal oxide powder (106). The method further includes grinding the primary mixture (110) to obtain a suspension (116), wherein at least the dispersant (104) is added to the primary mixture (110) during the grinding after predetermined time intervals.
