Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for locating a retroreflective object in a digital image and/or identifying a feature of the retroreflective object in the digital image. In certain environmental conditions, e.g. on a sunny day, or when the retroreflective material is damaged or soiled, it may be more challenging to locate the retroreflective object in the digital image and/or to identify a feature of the object in the digital image. The systems and methods disclosed herein may be particularly suited for object location and/or feature identification in situations in which there is a strong source of ambient light (e.g. on a sunny day) and/or when the retroreflective material on the object is damaged or soiled.

Abstract: A system for determining a type of a road upon which a vehicle is traveling includes a processor and a memory in communication with the processor. The memory has a road type determination module having has instructions that cause the processor to determine, using sensor data having information about at least one of a vehicle and a road upon which the vehicle is traveling, that the vehicle previously traveled on a ramp leading to a limited access highway. The road type determination module also has instructions that cause the processor to determine, using the sensor data, that the road is a limited access highway when the vehicle is traveling at or below a first predetermined speed for a first predetermined amount of time sufficiently immediately after determining that the vehicle was traveling on a ramp, and the vehicle is behind one or more preceding slow-moving vehicles.

Abstract: A method for reducing parking violations includes: receiving, by a controller of a vehicle, sign information of one or more traffic signs in an area surrounding the vehicle, wherein the sign information is a time series of data acquired by a set of cameras as the vehicle moves, using the vehicle as a frame of reference; identifying, by the controller, a potential parking spot in an area surrounding the vehicle; determining, by the controller, using the sign information, whether the potential parking spot is valid or invalid for the vehicle; and generating, by the controller, a notification if the potential parking spot is invalid.

Abstract: A computer includes a processor and a memory, and the memory stores instructions executable by the processor to receive a plurality of initial images including traffic signs, identify the traffic signs in the initial images, and generate new images by applying manipulations to the traffic signs in the initial images. The manipulations simulate physical changes to the traffic signs.

Abstract: The technology relates to factors regarding the external environment around a vehicle that are used to trigger enhanced driving directions for use by the driver. The factors can include issues such as adverse weather conditions, low light conditions and temporary obstacles or other obstructions that may prevent or reduce the ability of the driver to see street signs or other landmarks that are part of an initial set of driving directions. Upon determination of one or more relevant factors, the system is able to modify or otherwise enhances directions in real time. This allows the driver to be able to quickly and easily identify other visible landmarks and use such information to navigate to a desired destination. This approach employs one or more on-board cameras configured to detect objects and conditions in the environment adjacent to or otherwise nearby the vehicle, such as within line of sight of the vehicle's front end.

Abstract: A vehicular vision system includes a camera viewing exterior of the vehicle and capturing image data, and an electronic control unit (ECU) having an image processor for processing captured image data to detect presence of objects in the view of the camera. The ECU, responsive to processing of captured image data, determines presence of an intersection controlled by at least one stop indicator, with one stop indicator designated for the lane along which the vehicle is traveling. The ECU determines a right-of-way order of other vehicles at the intersection relative to the equipped vehicle and determines when the equipped vehicle has the right-of-way based on the determined right-of-way order. The ECU provides an indication to the driver of the equipped vehicle when the equipped vehicle has the right-of-way.

Abstract: Systems and methods for identifying travel way features in real time are provided. A method can include receiving two-dimensional and three-dimensional data associated with the surrounding environment of a vehicle. The method can include providing the two-dimensional data as one or more input into a machine-learned segmentation model to output a two-dimensional segmentation. The method can include fusing the two-dimensional segmentation with the three-dimensional data to generate a three-dimensional segmentation. The method can include storing the three-dimensional segmentation in a classification database with data indicative of one or more previously generated three-dimensional segmentations. The method can include providing one or more datapoint sets from the classification database as one or more inputs into a machine-learned enhancing model to obtain an enhanced three-dimensional segmentation. And, the method can include identifying one or more travel way features based at least in part on the enhanced three-dimensional segmentation.

Abstract: The invention provides an autonomous vehicle with a video camera that merges images taken a different light levels by replacing saturated parts of an image with corresponding parts of a lower-light image to stream a video with a dynamic range that extends to include very low-light and very intensely lit parts of a scene. The high dynamic range (HDR) camera streams the HDR video to a HDR system in real time—as the vehicle operates. As pixel values are provided by the camera's image sensors, those values are streamed directly through a pipeline processing operation and on to the HDR system without any requirement to wait and collect entire images, or frames, before using the video information.
