    Abstract: Methods for operating a mass spectrometer having a skimmer and a circuit configured to apply an electric potential to the skimmer comprise obtaining an initial mass spectrum of a sample and measuring a value indicating an ion beam intensity of one or more ion species. A varying DC electric potential is applied to the skimmer to identify an operational electric potential, wherein the DC electric potential is varied until the value indicating the ion beam intensity of the one or more ion species changes by a predetermined amount. The mass spectrum with the operational electric potential applied to the skimmer is output. In some examples, a pressure within the mass spectrometer is varied to identify an operational pressure, and the mass spectrum with the pressure within the mass spectrometer at the operational pressure is output.

    Abstract: A method of operating a mass spectrometer that allows for high-speed operation is disclosed. The method consists in separating the various steps needed to produce a mass spectrum into three or more conceptual stages in a pipeline, such that the instrument is performing steps to process more than two precursor-ion species simultaneously. In general, the number of stages in the pipeline should at least one more and, preferably, at least two more than the number of buffering storage devices in the instrument. The presently-taught methods and apparatus allow for nearly 100% duty cycle of ion accumulation for precursors of interest.

    Abstract: A mass spectrometer comprises: an ion source that generates ions having an initial range of mass-to-charge ratios; an auxiliary ion detector, downstream from the ion source that receives a plurality of first ion samples derived from the ions generated by the ion source and determines a respective ion current measurement for each of the plurality of first ion samples; a mass analyser, downstream from the ion source that receives a second ion sample derived from the ions generated by the ion source and to generate mass spectral data by mass analysis of the second ion sample; and an output stage that establishes an abundance measurement associated with at least some of the ions generated by the ion source based on the ion current measurements determined by the auxiliary ion detector.

    Abstract: An ion filter and a method of manufacturing an ion filter. The method including providing a monolithic structure; selectively removing regions of the structure, to form a pair of electrodes defining at least one ion channel therebetween.     Abstract: A mass analyzer includes two rotating electric field (REF) units, sinusoidal signal generators and a means for separation of dispersed ions. The REF units include a plurality of elongated electrodes surrounding a central axis, and are lined in tandem at elongated direction. Sinusoidal signals are applied to the electrodes to rotate electric fields within each REF unit. The means for separation is placed adjacent the downstream end of the 2nd REF unit. Ions enter the 1st REF unit, diverge outwards and leave the 1st REF unit on off-axis positions. The ions successively enter the 2nd REF unit and converge inwards because of 180 degrees phase difference from the 1st REF unit. Specified mass ions return to and travel along the central axis. However, unspecified mass ions deviate from the central axis and travel apart from the central axis. The means for separation separates specified ions from unspecified ions.
