Abstract:
Compositions which include mixtures of a calcium hydroxide overbased oil-soluble calcium sulfonate, hexylene glycol and a surfactant consisting of an ethoxylated aliphatic amine, particularly, diethoxylated cocoamine or diethoxylated soyamine, are useful as rust inhibiting additives for oils and the like. By incorporating these compositions in petroleum based oils such as petroleum based oils of lubricating oil quality which come into contact with metal surfaces under conditions such that the metal surfaces tend to rust or otherwise be subject to deterioration it is possible to inhibit rust formation on such metal surfaces.
Abstract:
Disclosed are a process for manufacturing metal diaryl dithiophosphates, certain metal diaryl dithiophosphates, and lubricating oil compositions containing said metal diaryl dithiophosphates. The process for the manufacture of metal diaryl dithiophosphate generally comprises reacting P.sub.2 S.sub.5 with a hydroxyl aryl compound to form a dithiophosphoric acid; and neutralizing said dithiophosphoric acid with zinc, barium, cadmium, magnesium or nickel base in the presence of an effective amount of a promoter, said promoter comprising dialkyl dithiophosphoric acid. Metal diaryl dithiophosphates, especially for use in lubricating oil compositions, can be made by the above process.
Abstract:
Disclosed are lubricating oil compositions having improved anti-wear properties, comprising a major portion of a lubricating oil and an effective amount of an oil soluble additive combination comprising a basic zinc alkyl dithiophosphate having alkyl groups made from primary alcohols containing from about 6 to about 20 carbon atoms and a non-acidic lubricating oil anti-rust compound comprising a succinic anhydride substituted with an alkenyl group which has about 8 to about 50 carbon atoms reacted with an alcohol, an amine, or mixtures thereof. The zinc dithiophosphate is generally made from primary alcohol containing about 7 to about 12 carbon atoms and generally has a zinc to phosphorous ratio of about 1.15-1.5:1.
Abstract:
Reaction mixtures comprising components (A) Group II metal salts of phosphorus-containing acids, (B) basically reacting alkali metal compounds, and (C) optionally, di- or trivalent metal-containing salts are suitable for the preparation of basic metal salt compositions of phosphorus-containing acids, with the proviso that components (A), (B), and (C) are not the same. The basic metal salt compositions are useful in the preparation of lubricants.
Abstract:
Lubricant compositions which exhibit excellent anti-wear, corrosion, and oxidative thermal properties are prepared by adding from 0.06 to 2.0% of a partial phosphorous pentasulfide adduct of a polycyanoethylated keto fatty ester to a base oil. The base oil may be either a synthetic diester oil or a standard test petroleum oil such as paraffin mineral oil.
Abstract:
A compound, suitable for use as an oil-soluble, ashless, lubricant additive, has the general formula:
WHEREIN: I. R is the residue of a monocyclic, non-conjugated olefin containing from 8 to 12 carbon atoms and at least two ethylenically unsaturated double bonds in the ring or is the residue of the product formed by reacting at least one, but not all, of the ethylenically unsaturated double bonds in such a monocyclic, non-conjugated olefin with sulphur, phosphorus pentasulphide, a mercaptan, phenol, thiophenol, thiocyanate anion or carboxylic acid; II. EACH R1 is the same or different and is an organic group; and III. X IS AN INTEGER OF 1, 2, OR 3. Also described are a process for preparing the compounds of the invention and lubricating compositions containing them.

Abstract:
Metal salts and amides of alkyl-lactam acetic acids are prepared by reacting gamma-hydrocarbyl butyrolactone acetic acid compounds derived from alkenylsuccinic anhydrides with metal compounds and amines or amines alone. High molecular weight lactam acid salts and amides and metal complexes and metal carbamates thereof are useful as detergents or dispersants in organic industrial fluids. Another aspect of this invention is a method of preparing lactone acetic acids in yields up to 90% conversion from alkenylsuccinic anhydrides.
